Piano sounds to mono

Postby khva1380 » 04 Apr 2011, 09:39

Hi All,

I recently bought a Nord Stage Ex and I have to say I am loving it. It works really well. I am replacing an original Yamaha CP-80 in my setup with it and - with the CP-80 sounds - it fits right in.

I do have a couple of questions about the piano sounds on it though. The PA rigs I typically play through are mono set ups (usually largeish set ups with audiences of 1000-5000) and I am having some issues with the pianos going to mono. I have the rig set up with pianos on channel 1&2, synth coming out on 3 and organs on 4. This then gets submixed with other synths/softsynths and I send mono lines to FOH with Pianos, Synths, Hammonds and Solo lines so our FOH engineer can mix to taste (which being a guitar orientated band is typically 'quiet'!). Using the Studio C7 XL piano with resonance sounds awesome in stereo with resonance, but when I set the piano to mono it just doesn't sound as good. Currently I am running both channels 1 & 2 out of the nord (with pianos on). I am assuming that the same signal comes from each and so there will be no summing problem to mono - but perhaps I am wrong! I'm assuming there are others using the Nord Stage ex in a mono rig - how do you deal with these issues?

In a related question, what pianos are peoples preferred sounds when running in mono? I'd be interested to hear which sources people are finding work best in mono situations.

FInally - the octave shift buttons...! Are the settings of octave shift on a patch basis or global? I am assuming they are on a patch basis, but I am getting odd octave jumps. I am pretty convinced I am not hitting the octave buttons by mistake - there is no midi coming in to the nord (only midi out) so I can't quite understand what is happening. Does anyone else ever get odd octave jumps?!

Thanks in advance!

Matt

Hi,
About the piano mono, if the sound goes out mono, why are you using channel 1 and 2?
I use the NS in a mono PA, but I don't use the "mono" feature, I just use channel 1 and it sounds good.
At least for me.
I use the Yamaha C7 1.
About the octave, you need to save the patch with the octave you want
if you change the patch, it will use the octave that is saved to it.
I hope this helps.

Hi Cleito,

Thanks for getting back to me - I use channels 1 and 2 as I have my system set up for stereo when I'm recording or just playing for pleasure. I have custom looms for running all my cabling, so I had all four outputs wired up - it would be no problem to have one disconnected for mono, I just assumed that when the mono mode is selected, the output would be identical from channel 1 and 2 so having both running wouldn't be a problem - it sounds as though this isn't the case, so I need to look in to it.

Thanks for your quick reply,

Matt
