Organ swell don´t work in dual kb mode?

Postby Skulski » 21 Aug 2017, 14:31

Apologies if this topic has been raised previously.

I´m using Electro 4 as a MIDI controller for NS3, mostly for organ. I´ve dedicated the organ to Panel B, and I´m using dual kb. Everything works fine, including the rotor pedal, except the organ volume control, which I use through the organ swell port. This works fine if I´m not using dual kb, but just panel A and B for piano and organ respectively.

Is there a setting I am missing or is this a bug?

It is not a bug, it is the standard behaviour same as it was on the previous NS and NS2 models: when you use the DualKeyb mode the Panel B stops responding to local controls and can only respond to MIDI CCs coming from the associated MIDI channel. The rotor pedal still works because it acts on both Panel A and B (Rotary effect is a single one and it is common to both panels) while SwellPed will only work on Panel A Organ when in DualKeyb mode.

If you want the panel B to repond also to the local controls you shouldn't activate the DualKeyb mode but just pilot it from the master via the associated MIDI Channel (as set in the MIDI -> panel B menu)

Thanks!

It was my hope that dual kb supported this as it seems like that the most user friendly two-keyboard-solution. That is from a newbie point of view as I´m just starting to explore the NS capabilities.

In another program, I have to (at least to my knowledge) choose dual kb to prevent that the sustain pedal connected to the NS will interfere with the sustain pedal connected to the Electro. For me it is not logical to use dual kb for some set-ups and not for others. But if this is the logic of Nord, then fine.

What is this forums views or experiences with this issue?

That's exactly the way to handle it (at least ... I do it), of course if you had a "proper master" i.e a keyboard with some MIDI Master Keyboard specific functionalities (which NE has not) things would be much easier and flexible (being able to change settings on it too, per program) but you can still do a lot with your setup too. ;)

I ran into the same problem tonight, and saw this thread. I'm not quite sure what solution you're recommending. My situation is slightly different from the original poster's in that my upper keyboard is a Prophet Rev2 synth, which doesn't send out CC 4 (for Organ Swell) at all.

Is there a way that I can have my swell pedal (set to Ctrl + Swell, if it makes a difference, though I don't think it will) and sustain pedal plugged into my Nord Stage 3 and have them control parts on panels A and B while having the Nord's keybed only control some of the parts that are producing sound (whether that's just parts on Panel A or, ideally, some parts on both panels?) Besides the dual-manual organ setup, I also want to do things like control a sampled sound on the Nord from my Prophet while playing a piano sound on the Nord.

I just got my NS3 and also frustrated by the swell pedal being disabled in Dual KB mode. It was such a simple and elegant way to work on my NS2 EX. Sometimes I do gigs with just the compact and others I have the Piano2 on the bottom. There are ways around it, like sending midi to Panel B, but none work as seamlessly as Dual KB mode did previously. Hopefully the functionality will return with the next os update.

Just thought I'd write here that the newest OS (2.10 at the time of writing) fixes this issue. Now the swell and sustain pedals plugged into the NS3 will also work with the second keyboard/panel. I'm glad they did this :)
