NS2/3 - Is pitch morphable?

Postby wallhara » 18 Oct 2017, 11:09

Hi, I was wondering if a pitch slide could be assigned to the mod wheel. Like pressing a chord (or a 4th or a 5th) and have it rise steadily by turning the wheel until it gets to the specified end pitch (say 1, 2 or 3 octaves up, or down). Sort of like a portamento/glide, but one you can control manually with the wheel. Do you think this can be done? Thanks for any suggestion.

That is true for the stage 2..

But on the Stage 3 pitch actually IS morphable.
You can, with the synth section, use the oscillator configuration "pitch", with wave, classic and formants, and assign the oscillator control to the mod wheel, control pedal or aftertouch to get as much as 24 semitones of bend range.

True, but that trick would work with some specific type of NS3 Synth sounds only, i.e. not with Organ, Piano; it is not a general feature I mean.

PS: the OP has a Nord Stage 2, at least according to the profile ;)

It's pretty rare that someone needs to pitch bend a piano or organ at all, much less more than the two semi-tones already supported with the pitch stick. It's really a synth thing. And after all, Nord has always been about easily/directly doing the things commonly needed, as opposed to being able to do just about anything you can think of (which is something other keyboard designs like Kronos are more geared toward). I can see where some might be disappointed that you can't apply the wide bends to samples, but it's also somewhat understandable as samples behave differently from traditional oscillators (and in fact tend to not sound very good when bent or otherwise shifted too far away from their true pitch).

And much more processor intensive from a development standpoint, I would assume.

Thanks all. To clarify, I would like to use this with an orchestral (sampled) sound, to create a glissando effect.
My reasoning was that I would (maybe) have more control on the pitch rise than by using the bend stick.
I have in fact both a 2 and a (new) 3, I forgot to update my status.

I saw a video of Herbie Hancock playing "Chameleon" in Montreux Jazz Festival with Tal Wilkenfield and he,s doing a solo on his Roland Keytra where is using a bend on an Electric piano sound...Surprosing but that was good...Ok, it's Herbie Hancock...

You can only use pitch morph with the wave, classic and formants waveforms, not with samples.
