Thanks Jonesy, sounds like we're on same road... waiting for NS3 to come out! I looked at SL88 Grand too, but I'm willing to concede key weight for dead weight and I think the SL88 Grand is like 60 lbs.

Thanks Scott, agreed on the PX5S interface. I do like the weighted feel vs the board weight balance with the PX5S... my back carries more "decision weight" these days when it comes to carrying weight!

Thanks Sus, luckily I haven't had to resort to velcro yet! :-D Sounds like the added split point, drawbars and Song List feature on the NS3 Compact is going great to give the configuration I'm looking for.

Gotta watch more YouTube videos on how people use the 2 KB and Slot/midi splits... I'm assuming the midi menu/capabilities on the NS3 is not going to be too different from the NS2, if at all.

Quick question, if anyone is still reading this thread... when you split/layer the same instrument (piano/piano, synth/synth) on the NS2, do you have to utilize two slots or can you split/layer the same instrument within a single Slot?

Two slots. You can only have one of a given "instrument" per slot.

Hmm, so the "by slots" (Dual KB) configuration takes the split/layer ability out for both the NS and controller... time to look at the "by midi" configuration.

Not entirely... each of the two boards could still have a piano+synth+organ+ext layers/splits, just no more than one of each. (Ext can be used for an additional sound via, say, an iPad, or a Roland Boutique module.) In addition, if your bottom board is, say, the PX5S we've been talking about, you could split/layer its own sounds with the Nord sounds that you're playing from that board.

This thread has just made me thinking the following:
Would the best two keyboards rig be the Kawai MP11 for the best Piano feeling and the Stage 3 compact for the waterfall feeling? Ok, quite a lot of money but seems to be the ideal "Nord compact+88 Controller" situation...

There are a number of "ideal 88s" to pairs an NS3-73 with, depending on what you're after. The MP11 is one of the best weighted actions, but it's 70 lbs to carry around if you're gigging. The PX5S we've been talking about may not be as nice, but it's still a board lots of people like and it weighs just 24 lbs. Lately, I've been rehearsing with a Nord over a Korg SV1, that's working pretty well for me, and it give me EP sounds that I actually prefer to the ones in the Nord. (PX5S has some nice EP sounds, too, though SV1 has my favorite.) I'm also using a little Yamaha MX49 which gives me the Yamaha sounds I like for strings, winds, etc. Of course, then that's three boards. If I'd wanted to stick with two but wanted those Yamaha sounds, I could combine the NS3-73 with an MX88 (or MOXF8)... it's not the best feeling 88 action, but I guess the point is that "ideal" is always a trade-off. ;-) But if you're completely satisfied with just the Nord sounds, then at least you can choose your 88 just for its non-sonic characteristics (feel, price, travel weight). Personally, I'd be tempted to also consider what else it might add to my palette sonically!

Quai, if budget and weight weren't an issue, that be a sweet combo! For me, I'm looking for light weight and easiest setup.

Back to my two board configuration. The only issue in "Dual KB" mode would be if I needed a synth+synth layer on the top tier (NS3 Compact). Assuming the Song List is similar to the NE5 Set List, I'll have five quick access program buttons available for when I need to switch between strings, horns, synth within a single song.

That's where I think the EXT function can solve the problem, by pairing with the Nord with a small synth module or iPad/iPhone, for the occasional time you need to layer two synth sounds. That's one more nice thing about the PX5S... it has that space on the right where you can put such a thing (since it looks the the NS3's own controls surface will be pretty packed.)

Yes, right about the weight...I was always focusing more on the closest keybed action from a real piano than the weight...Anyway, with my recent backbone surgery, I will always need some help now so, if I'm able to find some "Nice roadies" to help a poor handicaped guy, well, why not prefering the weight as I wouldn't carry them...Just kinding, thanks for the thoughts though...
