Nord Stage 3 - Instrument Routing

Postby zoooombiex » 14 Feb 2018, 19:09

I know this has been brought up a few times, but it is buried in some long threads and scattered across a few conversations, so I was hoping to get a clearer answer.

Is Nord planning on implementing full instrument routing on the Stage 3 (as it was on the Stage 2)?

I got my Stage 3 recently (updated to the latest firmware), and I see that I can do panel routing and also add one sub-route for one instrument. E.g., you can have all instruments routed to channels 1-2, and organ to channel 3. But on mine you can only have ONE sub-route. So you can't do all instruments to 1&2, organ to 3, and synth to 4. I realize that I could get some of the same results by putting one of the instruments on a different panel - but that's not really the same, and it's a lot more clunky to deal with live (and seems to fundamentally go against the Nord ease-of-use aesthetic).

IMO this is a big problem. I really like a lot of the new features, but I'm seriously considering returning mine. I still have my Stage 2 and instrument routing is fundamental to my setup.

What do you mean by all instruments? If you have organ to 3 and d synths to 4, then, you just have Piano on 1&2, not all instruments?

Sorry for the ambiguity, I was trying to describe it according to how it's set up on the system menu.

On the system menu for routing, there is a "Main" option that sets the default routing for all instruments, and then there is a "Sub" option to separately route one (and only one) instrument. (The "Sub" option has its own "Dest" setting that says where the Sub route goes.) But you can only pick one "Sub" route at a time - if you set two "Sub" routes, it only actually uses the last one you set.

So, e.g., if you set "Main" to 1&2, then you set "Sub" to "Organ" [Dest > 3] and then set "Sub" to "Synth" [Dest > 4], the result will be Piano + Organ on 1&2, and Synth on 4. It will ignore the fact that you set "Sub" > Organ > 3 because that is not the currently-active Sub setting.

My goal is to get to what you described - Piano on 1&2, Organ on 3, and Synth on 4.

I appreciate that Nord added this sub-routing feature in one of the prior updates. But it seems odd that they did not implement full instrument routing. Is there a hardware limitation that prevents it?

A temporary work around?
Panel A: (Main to 1&2)
Panel A: (Sub to Organ Dest 3)
Panel B: (Main to 1&2)
Panel B: (Sub to Synth Dest 4)

Yeah, per the first post, I'm aware of using the panel routing as a work-around in theory. But at least for my uses live, with lots of instrument changing on the fly, that doesn't work for me.

@zoooombiex - you're right about this being limited per panel, not by instrument.

But I'm wondering if you're aware that you can set the output routing by program, which means one program with fancy Panel A/B routing will not mess up your live instrument changes...
