Anotherscott:-

Solton:-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SOLTON-DOPPLE ... 27c6ce151c bashed up one.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Solton-Leslie ... 460348576e clean one

Sharma:-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sharma-rotati ... 1e6dca1146

The central problem with transistor leslies and imitators is that they give a very loud/harsh sound when pushed. Some of them (Sharma for sure) don't have the cut off a leslie does and sound like a hammond-through-headphones though a rotary.

The key thing, which blows all of this out of the water is the Nord has a nice rotary stop sound, so you get the boxyness and the warmth of a proper leslie and then put that through a clinical, harsh transistor leslie. They are also f**** loud for want of better words.

The whole thing with a leslie is the reflections you get off objects which give the richness, if you ask me, a miked up leslie is a simplified, easy to replicate effect. Clearly, the position of ambient microphones to record this and how you go about positioning your speakers are probably worthy of a masters degree themselves.

The one thing Nord did which was totally under rated and barely known about is give people the ability to run an organ line into one of these horrible cheap leslie imitators and make it sound like a B3 with a 147 (which I prefer to a 122)

Indeed, There isn't coming an update to the NS2 organ section.
I received a reply too....

Hi

There is always a limit to what a certain piece of hardware design can do, and there is simply "not enough room" in the Stage OS and hardware to be compatible with the new C2 B3 engine and the new rotary's. The C2 and C2D are dedicated organs, this is what they are designed to be. The Stage 2 is a multiinstrument with lots, and lots of other features. Our developers worked very hard to make the new organ features as good as we could get them, and unfortunately this means that they became exclusive to the C2 series and the Electro 4D.

Best regards,

Clavia staff frequently use form letters for communications with outsiders :(
This is part of my disappointment with them as a company.
I still love the instruments though.

Well, it does make sense, when people are sending in the exact same question, to send them out the same answer. And rewriting the same info again and again wouldn't be the most productive use of their time. It's certainly a lot better than the companies you write to and never hear back from at all!

True fact.

Atleast we can be sure now and stop hoping, we do have a great instrument tough! :D

The argument "not enough room" IMO is somewhat farfetched.
But I understand them, because their business is to sell new instruments,
and they don't sell a future STAGE 3 (or whatever) to the owner of a current
STAGE if there are no improvements.
In the same way I'm convinced that a future {rather easy possible) velocity-multi-layer
sampling will not be available for the "old" boards.

That sound awfully cynical to me. How do you reconcile that with Nord's industry-leading support FOR creating upgrades to older models? Why should they have made the C2 software-upgradable to the C2D then? I just don't think their actions match the approach you attribute to them. Room for code in a given model is finite, their explanation does not sound far-fetched to me at all. And especially since they did provide the upgrade for the C2, I don't see any reason to suspect it's not the truth, even if I were inclined to be more cynical than I am.

+1

It never ceases to amaze me that people think that things that they have no knowledge about can be "easy" to do. Or, the only reason things don't get upgraded is because a company can't sell future products. I bought the NS2 because it's a great product that sounded good when I bought it. I did not buy it with the expectations that I would get a better sounding organ or new Rhodes samples down the line. I do expect the bugs that are found is the OS to be fixed (and I submitted a bug report and got a personal reply from Tomas with a workaround and the bug was fixed in a OS update). I'm still very happy with my NS2. I have been provided bonus samples via download from their website since I purchase my unit. Thanks Clavia! I want to rant on but I must quit now...
