Hello Guy,
think of a sample as a building block of a synth patch, but not a fully formed program with modulation routings and effects settings.
A sample cannot be played or listened to without first being part of some type of synth patch and program.

Until Clavia gives us program editing capabilities with the Nord Sound Manager application, this must be done on the NS2 itself.

The simplest way to do this, is to find a synth sound (patch)with a structure similar to what you want to hear (the way it starts, sustains, ends and modulation in between) then substitute your new sample in the oscillator section, turn the filter res all the way down and the filter freq all the way up (filter mode =LP12)
Then when you're happy with it, name it and save it somewhere.

Cheers, Hanon

That is good...but what about the SLOTS? How do samples get into a SLOT A or SLOT B? Sorry to be thick here

No, it's quite alright.
Clavia has kind of developed it's own lexicon for some of this stuff.

Samples are used in synth sounds also called patches, patches are used in slots and saved as programs.

Cheers, Hanon

So.... if a PROGRAM is a basic SAMPLE that has been wrappered with FX etc.

How do you assign a Program to SLOT A or SLOT B then....I am determined to be thick here :)

Another thing I noticed is that when I am playing a sound and I move along to the next sound (DIAL or BUTTON press) the 1st sound is abruptly cut off...is there a way of letting the 1st sound decay naturally when this is done?

Just activate the desired slot and call up the desired sound, it's that easy.
GuyManning wrote:Can some one give me the "Dummies' guide" to the 3 scenarios below using Sound Manager

1. Create a new program where SLOT A is a PIANO and SLOT B is an ORGAN so I can switch A>B quickly
2. Create a new program where SLOT A is a Mellotron String and SLOT B is A Mellotron Choir
3. Create a a new program LAYER using both sounds from 2 (i.e. Tron STRs and Tron CHOIR together for the full keyboard)
To try to clarify what others have said as well, you only use Sound Manager to get the sounds IN to the Nord. Once they are in there, you use the front panel to assign the sounds to slots and save them into programs.

Although it is possible to edit either Slot while both slots are active (indicated by having both slot lights illuminated, but one blinking), since you're just starting, it will probably be simpler to only deal with one active slot at a time while editing (solid light over one Slot button, no light over the other). You can switch back and forth between these two modes by pressing the two slot buttons at the same time. So to edit Slot A, set it so that only the light above the Slot A button is illuminated, and the light over the Slot B button is dark. (If both are lighting up, then press them both together so that only one will light up.)

For these examples I'm about to give, there is actually more than one way to go about it. I am just providing one easy way to get you started.

So for scenario 1: Activate Slot A, turn on just the Piano section, and select the Piano you want. Then hit the Slot B button, turn on just the organ section, and select the organ sound you want. Now you can switch A<->B quickly to go back and forth between the two sounds.

Scenario 2 is exactly the same, except instead of turning on the PIano and Organ sections on Slots A and B respectively, you will turn on the Synth section on both slots, and load the desired synth sound for each one. If there is an existing Nord synth patch with the sound you want (as I think there is for those mellotron sounds), as described in the "Load a Synth Sound" in the manual, hit Shift and the Load Sound button in the middle of the synth control panel, and then use the knob next to that button to dial up the desired sound (the names of the sounds will appear in the main LCD display). If there is no existing Nord synth patch that has the sound you want, i.e. when you want to create a new patch using a non-stock Sample you have loaded in from the Sample LIbrary using the Sound Manager, it is simplest to use SOUND INIT to start with a "clean slate" (or as has been mentioned, you can call up some other patch that has the general sonic characteristics you're looking for, using that "Load a Synth Sound" procedure), and then call up the sample you want to use. To call up the sample (assuming you have already loaded it into the keyboard using the Sound Manager), hit the LOAD button until SAMP is lit up, and then use the knob until the desired sample is selected (again, you will see the names of the samples in the main LCD). You can then use the synth editing controls to alter the sound as desired.

I think something that may be confusing, which I think may not be so clear from the manual, is the distinction that the LOAD button by itself is used to load a sample or waveform which will be used with whatever the current synth settings are, whereas when the LOAD button is used with the SHIFT button, then it is used to call up a synth preset which means you're selecting, not just a sample or waveform, but also a whole complete set of saved synth settings to go along with it.

For Scenario 3, just hit both the Slot A and Slot B buttons at the same time, and then they will sound together.

The only time you can switch to a new sound without having the old one cut off is when switching from a Slot A sound to a Slot B sound (or vice versa). So if there are particular times you know you will need to do this, you should see if you can put the two sounds you want to switch between into two slots of the same program.

So If I have an existing program in A:02:3 which is a SYNTH PAD and another in B:05:2 which is a nice GRAND PIANO...how can I create a new program in BANK D:10:1 that has the pad in SLOT A and the Piano in SLOT B so I can switch without losing the decay from the SYNTH PAD? or is this not possible?

I don't know of an easy way to do that other than copying one of the programs to a new program, and editting that new program's other slot to mimic the other desired slot. In this case, pianos are much easier to dial up than a synth sound, especially one with a lot of subtractive synthesis features, so personally I'd copy the synth program to another, then switch to the other slot, remove anything there and set up the piano from scratch..
