How do I turn on sustain pedal?

Postby Youjun » 24 Feb 2017, 22:53

So I recently got a second hand 88 nord stage revision, and I plugged the pedal (I have an MGear pedal) into the sustain pedal jack in the back of the keyboard, but when I play it, it doesn't hold notes. I've played around with the sustain pedal polarity, and when it is open it does hold the note, but it holds the notes even though i'm not stepping on the pedal.

I've tested the pedal with other keyboards and it works fine with them.
The guy who sold the keyboard to me told me that the pedal works, something was just turned off. I haven't figured it out yet.
Does anyone have any idea on whats wrong or any suggested solutions?

Thank you,
Youjun

Is the sustain function switched on? It is labelled SUSTPED in the NS2 and it is stored in each program.

The sustped glows red on the keyboard, so i think it is on. Is there another way to turn it on other than right on the keyboard?

Check exactly where you are plugging the pedal.
Also check in the manual if your instrument has a setting for the sustain pedal type (the NS2 has, but you do not say which instrument model you've got)
If you got a multimeter, please test whether the pedal actually works (it should behave like a momentarily On/Off switch. Sometimes a damaged cable might start/stop working when you move the pedal.

OP wrote "88 nord stage" so either a Classic/ex or NS2, in any case you are right: the OP should check the System settings of the Sustain pedal type + ensure the pedal itself is plugged in the right input and working fine from an electric standpoint.

the pedal is plugged into the sustain pedal jack in the back, not control. I tested the pedal with other keyboards after I realized it didn't work with the nord and it worked fine with those keyboards.. I'm not sure which pedal type the pedal should be on because I have an m-gear pedal and there isn't an option for that. I feel like any pedal should work though. ):

For Sustain it doesn't matter what the model is but its operational mode ("open at rest" or "closed at rest") so you have only 2 options (apart from Auto and Triple).

Try either Open or Closed and see if one works (or check the pedal with a multimeter so you can determine which is the right one upfront)

PS: check also if your pedal has a "polarity" (mode) switch on its back. If it is an M-audio MGear SP2 it should, you may want to check its position to see if it is set as Open or Closed
