Hooking up the Nord Stage 2

Postby Nordee » 08 Nov 2011, 08:38

Such a dumb question, but I honestly can't find it in the user manual -- does the Channel 1 output act as Left/Mono if you just want to run a single line out of the keyboard into a powered speaker? Also, is there away to get automatic email notifications when someone replies to your post in this forum?

Thanks

Hi Nordee,
For the first question, there is a related discussion here: nord-stage-forum-f3/left-right-vs-left-mono-right-outputs-t1312.html?hilit=mono%20left%20out.
On the Nord Stage, you get indeeda MONO Signal IF you activate the MONO button in the Piano section. This will make the Piano but also all FX etc. MONO AFAIK.

For the second question, it is possible, just click on the "Subscribe Topic" Link below ANY post.

Alternatively, when posting, click on Options below the post text field and select "Notify me when a reply is posted", see the picture:

Thanks for the help, Johannes. I checked out the thread, and it sure seems a lot more complicated than I was expecting. Currently, I'm running one line out of Channel 1 on the NS2 and into a new powered speaker (EV Zxa1 -- which sounds great, by the way), and I was wondering if I was shortchanging the sound much. But today I did an A/B comparison between the mono switch on and off, and there was a little difference. But with the pianos, I think I like it better with the mono off.

I do have another question -- I think I figured out from the forum site you sent me that if I want to run stereo, I would run lines out of Channel 1 and 2 and have the mono switch turned off. Is that your understanding?
Thanks!

Yes, this is correct. If you have your sounds routed to CH1 & CH2 (which is the default), those two outputs (with Mono off) will give you a stereo signal.

The Mono button does not affect many of the sounds, mostly it changes the effects. For example, the Rhodes sound is already in mono, but the reverb is stereo. So if you bring up a Rhodes with no effects, you're not going to hear any difference with or without the Mono button.

Most stereo effects sound awful when summed to mono. Using the mono button brings up a monophonic version of the effect instead of the stereo one.
