Get to the different piano 'sections' easily?

Postby Jhbackingtracks » 10 Aug 2017, 01:20

Now that the Nord Piano 3 and Nord Stage 3 has this 'wheel' way of scrolling through the different piano types, after being so used to a button to quickly get to each category/type of piano on the Nord Piano 2 and Stage 2, I was wondering if there was a quick shortcut way of stepping through each 'category' rather than having to scroll through slowly until you're into the category you're after.

In a live situation, I found it much quicker to quickly tap the button 3 times to jump up to Electric Pianos for example, rather than quickly trying to scroll through and maybe not scrolling far enough, or scrolling too far and having to scroll back etc.

I wondered if there was a nice shortcut for quick programming! :)

I have no Stage 3 so, I cannot help, but I agree on the quicker way to select a new E.Piano coming from an A.Piano, or even going to Clavinet...I use this way in few songs when at the end, I want to finish with a nice Autowah Clav for example...it takes me few seconds and nobody noticed even within my bandmates....And not only I change the Piano type but also the effect, adding the Autowah....Another reason for me to keep my Stage 2...Even if I know that I will have a Satge 3 in an unknown future....

I see your point but I wonder: wouldn't it be easier/better, in a live situation, having now also the seamless transition, to create two nearby Programs/Live buffers with the 2 pianos you need but preselected and just switch the Program/Live (1 button click)? Actually that's what I am doing on NS2 too, with Live 1 for Acoustic piano, Live 2 for Rhodes, Live 3 for Wurly..

This is one area where Nord really falls short. Direct access program switching is non-existent, and the live buttons and set lists don't do anything to fix that.

I've had to add an iPad mini running touch OSC to my NE5D just so I can have direct access to program changes. Its so much more functional/useful to be able to touch a single button and change from patch one to patch 20.

That is what song mode is for. With the seamless transition it is just one button press.

But I also miss(ed) the quick keypress option.

I am not with my NS3 right now, but when you use the wheel to scroll through the content of banks, a very quick turn always gets you to the start of the next section (e.g. from B:nn to C:01).

Maybe you could see if this feature is also present for piano section selection?

I run Forscore on my iPad Pro and send Program Changes to my Kronos to setup patches when I pick a chart to read.

Can this be done with the NS3C?

Yes of course, you just need to send Program Changes to NS3 MIDI Global Channel

Yes, I think that could work. At first I thought that approach missed the point of the OP, because if you're looking to grab sounds on the fly (rather than plan in advance what you need for a particular song) you don't know which are "the 2 pianos you need." But yes, you could create--whether with Live buttons or with a Song--a set of 5 buttons where the first button is Grand 1, the 2nd button is Upright 1, the 3rd button is EP 1, the 4th button is Clav 1, and that would give the OP the instant navigation to each Piano Category that he is looking for (and of course, using the sound manager, it could be set up so that the "1" location for each category is the sound of that category that you most often want anyway; and then once you're in that category, the procedure for choosing a different one could be done use the same scroll method as always). Another advantage of this even over the older NS2 method that he misses is that there could be a single instant-access button each for Rhodes and Wurly (as you have set it up yourself), which addresses the really annoying change Nord made of moving Wurly into the same category as Rhodes (leaving only FM piano in the other EP category, and that's a sound I never use). The only problem with this is that, of course, while your Live/SongSound buttons are set up this way, they are unavailable for anything else. Not an insignificant issue. But it is a workaround that could come in useful at least for times you don't need those buttons for other purposes.

Related to what I said above, I think live buttons and set list fix that a little, in that, at any given time, you do get direct access program to 4 or 5 programs (NE5D or NS3 respectively). It's not a lot, but it's not non-existent. I have my E5D set up so that the 4 programs I use most are in Song 1, and the next 4 that I use a lot are a knob-click away on Song 2, so I almost always have instant or near-instant access to my 8 most used sounds. But yeah, an iPad can help here, as you pointed out.

If they do it in one place, they might well do it in the other, that's a great tip. Hope it works!

Does the NS3 have "pending load" like the NS2? That has become my secret weapon to on-the-fly patch selection. I still use the Sound Manager to get things relatively in order, but have gone to the alphabetical sorting and using pending load to dial up my next sound before I need it. That may be less needed in Set List mode on NS3, but still thinking it would be good to be able to have the next sound available and flashing before actually enabling it.
