Hi,
I'm new to the stage2ex and I'm after a simple recording solution which would not require the use of a computer:
I was planning to purchase a multi track recorder for home use, the zoom r8. Would it be ok to connect the first two audio outputs to the zoom r8 directly or would it require some pre-amp or other gear?
Any other suggestion or alternative?
All I'm after need is the ability to record a track whilst playing back prerecorded tracks and as bonus feature the ability to create my own drumtrack using pads buttons.
Many thanks

Re: from stage2ex to multitrack recorder
The Zoom specs say it supports up to +4dBm into 50kOhms for the unbalanced (Nord 2-conductor guitar-style) inputs.
This limits the maximum input to 11V (I assume RMS). I believe the Nord drives its audio from +/-12VDC, so it's possible the Nord at its highest output level could overdrive the Zoom at 12Vrms (although I couldn't confirm this as I failed to find a clear Nord output specification in my quick search).
I see no need for a pre-Amp. The Nord should be able to drive directly. As always, turn your outputs to zero prior to connection and bring the levels up to an appropriate level by checking the metered input levels on the Zoom (I assume it has these).

Sorry but I'll need a crash course, can I use two 1/4" cables going into the zoom r8? what about balanced/unbalanced?
Also would it be possible to record stereo (although it would be unfair to ask if you don't own the zoom r8).
And regarding cheapish monitor headphones would you have any suggestion?

The Zoom's specs say it employs XLR/TRS combo jacks that support both balanced and unbalanced. The "TRS" (Tip, Ring, Sleeve) are the 1/4" plugs: unbalanced have just two conductors, Balanced uses 3.
Some people have success using Balanced cables on Nords, but it's not consistent: I recommend using unbalanced to match the Nord requirements.
The Zoom manual says :
When using a sythesizer... or other stereo devices:
- Connect OUTPUT jack L to INPUT 1 and R to INPUT 2.
- Set both input selection switches to MIC LINE
Seems likely it records stereo... and it seems time for you to read the manuals (or watch product videos) to learn about the Zoom.
As for headphones: Make sure they're comfortable. Wear them in the store for a half hour to make sure they don't squeeze your head too much or overheat your ears.
