First Gig with the NS3C findings

Postby kbrkr » 18 Nov 2017, 17:00

I usually try to bring only 1 keyboard on gigs to keep my complexity and load lightweight. However, last night I brought the NS3C out as a test on my 2nd tier with the Kronos 2. Naturally, I really enjoyed having two keyboards. I really helps with the workflow on songs with multiple instruments, here are some of my findings:

1. I need to tweak the Leslie in the organ section and I'm asking users to share some of their settings. My issue is in the Mix (house mono feed / monitor stereo setup), I was getting very annoying pulsing / vibrato effect at high speed. It sounds like the low rotor spins up too fast and then slows down just as fast which creates a (to my ears) unnatural sound when it gets to full speed. I really don't want to add an Ventilator; i.e. I'm lazy more cables and stuff to go wrong.
2. I LOVE the LIVE mode. I use the 5 song sections to contain my bread and butter patches for Piano, Wurly, Organ, Brass, Strings. I wish there were more than 5 choices.
3. Brass patches are not very good. I am chomping at the bit ( as is everyone else ) for the ability to add my own samples.
4. LOVE the ergonomics. This is NORDS HUGE advantage. Having all settings on surface controls is HUGE and makes playing a pleasure. I now see the attraction to the product line.
5. LOVE the ability to use sustain pedal on piano as a Leslie On/Off switch.
6. I was surprised how easy it was to navigate to programs. I setup my playlist with program numbers prior to the gig. Once we started playing, it was fast and easy to navigate to each program.
7. LOVE the fitted NORD case for the NS3C. It is well built, padded, and RED.
8. LOVE how light the keyboard is.
9. LOVE the potential to someday be able to only use the NS3C on gigs. Unfortunately, it is not ready for prime time just yet. (Thanks Nord techs for working hard on the sample editor and the bugs!!!)
10. Still trying to wrap my head around the EQ settings specific to each panel and sound group (Piano, Organ, Synth). I keep feeling my EQ settings are dropping off when I switch to a different sound/panel.

Thanks for reading and thanks Nord!

Al

Heartfelt agreement with everything you say!

Except 3 — I have finally built a brass patch that I consider acceptable, after years of trying with the Stage 2:

It's a combination of BrassSection Double 2, and Brass Ensemble 2.

Maybe it's the integrated basic settings in the nsmp3 format, but for some reason, this was an instant hit for me, and I could never find anything that worked for me on the Stage 2.

Can you explain what you mean by point 10?

I think you'd be better off defining your "song #1" to have those sounds assigned to those buttons (as I did on my NE5D), because they will be permanent and fixed. If you use Live mode for this, and you change any settings while playing, the buttons will have your new tweaked setting, with no way to get back to your original default, since it auto-saves all changes instead of saving only when you specifically tell it to.
