e-Piano problem

Postby Klimperkasten » 11 Mar 2017, 12:25

Hi there,

I have a strange problem with my Stage 2 EX.

When playing electric pianos (or Wurlitzers etc.), I can hear nothing using the headphones output. Only when I turn the reverb higher, I can hear the echo of the e-Pianos, but not the sound itself. Acoustic pianos, organ and synths sound normal over the headphones, just the electric pianos are muted.

I've already resetted to factory presets and updated the OS, but to no avail.

What can I do..??

It has probably to do with the Output Routing, check if you have assigned the Piano section on some patches to out 3/4, asthe headphones only monitor outputs 1/2.

This sounds like a mono/stereo problem to me. Do you use a mono cable or some kind of stereo to mono adapter?
You could activate mono output (shift + slot a) and see if anything changed. (Do you still hear acoustics pianos, reverb,...?)

This is almost always caused by cheap and broken minijack-to-1/4" jack adapters. A wiring problem causes the phase to be inverted and shorted to mono, which cancels out everything of the signal except the stereo bits (such as reverb and the overtones)

But if that was the case then it would happen with all sounds, not just the EPs as the OP says, I think.

Hi all,

and thanks for your thoughts, but this problem only affects the electric pianos or Wurlis. All other sounds are just fine. No headphone adapter used, and my headphone is a better AKG one. ;-)

The piano section is routed to 1&2.

Most odd. Is it a program or a sample? E.g. if you choose a program with an acoustic piano AND it sounds OK, what happens when you change just the npno sample from acoustic to electric piano?

Sorry, I don't exactly understand what you want me to try. :-/

What I tried just yet is: Go to the very first sound (Italian Grand). That sounds perfectly as it should. But when I change to any electric piano (1 or 2) via the "Type" button in the piano section, I only hear the reverb of the sound.

I was asking exactly what you reported :-) thanks. Are you implying that NONE of the original programs that have an epiano in them sound odd.
If so, what happens if you issue the "Init Piano" key press. Does it start sounding OK?

Most important, did you try maxpiano's suggestion? Please check which sections are you routing to which outputs and try with everything going to outputs 1 and 2.

Can you please make a recording of it and post it here for everybody to understand exactly what is going on.
Also, how are you connecting the audio out?
Have you tried reloading the epiano samples?

Hi Mr. G.,

many thanks for your support - and to all others, too! :-)

Okay, I've tried this:

* Select the first sound (Italian Grand) -- sounds as it should
* Press "Shift" and Button "C" in the "Program Bank" section. That's "Piano init", right? -- Italian Grand still sounds as it should.
* Change to any other electric piano type - EP1, EP2 or Clavinet: No sound, just the echo of the reverb. -- Acoustics, Uprights and Harpsichords sound perfect, only the electrics sound are missing.

+ All sections are routed to the outputs 1&2.
* I've updated the OS from 1.dunno (initial revision) to 2.20.
* I've uploaded the factory reset file with Sound Manager.

Unluckily, I can't connect the keyboard to my PC to record (it's standing in the living room). Thus, I can't check if the electric pianos are sounding okay over the outputs, because I have no mixer and can't connect the outputs to my soundcard. The only output I have and want to use is the headphone jack...

Sorry, I ain't no professional musician, I'm rather a computer geek. That's what nags me the most about this issue...

P.S.:
Yes, I've rebooted the keyboard (several times) after resetting it. ;-)
