Controlling Slot B synth volume using extern

Postby congoblue » 04 Apr 2018, 11:11

On my Stage2 I've got a synth pad playing a held chord on slot B, while I am playing piano and organ on slot A.

It'd be really nice to be able to control the volume of the synth pad without having to switch to slot B to change it. I was wondering if I could loop back the MIDI (I'm not using any external MIDI devices) and use the Extern knob to change the volume of the pad. Would this work?
I know I could do this with a Morph but I'm using them all to do things with the organ.

You could do the synth pad on slot A, perhaps? Or make slot B the active slot.

I had a pad on slot A as well... I was trying to have an ambient-type held pad on slot B, which would run behind the whole song, while playing slot A sometimes with a string pad.
I would normally do this with a second keyboard but I was wondering if I could leave the other keyboard at home and do it all on the Nord.

It should work, setting Synth B and Extern A MIDI Channels properly (and assuming Global is not set to any MIDI channel, of course) and Extern encoder set to Volume.

If youre not using the wheel, you could just assign the volume to the wheel. Or use a control pedal.

Yeah I am using the wheel to morph organ drawbars, and I already have a pedal for organ swell plus one for sustain and and one for rotor so I am running out of feet! I will try the extern knob and report back... could be a useful dodge for an otherwise unused control.

Do you use a second control pedal? I have found that is a very helpful addition to the NS2. I have one pedal dedicated to organ swell and one for controlling other stuff via morphs, such as synth volume, clav wah, etc. Sure you might run out of feet, but usually you are not triggering all of these things at the same time. I'm quite comfortable with a switch for Leslie fast/slow, pedal for organ, sustain pedal, and control pedal. Here's my rig.

Nice setup, my problem is actually more running out of brainpower than running out of feet, trying to remember which pedal does what. But I've only had the nord a few weeks so I guess I am still on a steep learning curve!

My recommendation if you want to add a second pedal for Control, then always have the same first pedal as your organ swell (that's what I do) and then start with using that second pedal for volume on synth layers (that's how I started) and then think about other uses as you get more comfortable. I occasionally use the control pedal to do a "reverse morph" of volume where I can completely change sounds by moving forward the pedal. For example, I can be playing a sound on Panel A that has organ split with a synth lead and then I sweep the pedal and it lowers the volume of everything on Panel A while simultaneously raising volume on Panel B, which has a piano and synth pad. Just one example. It's really cool, deep, and flexible.

+1:
I do the same, do not be scared about pedals....
I have from left to right, under my stage 2
1) Boss switch for Leslie speed
2) sustain pedal for both the NL2X and the D50
3) Yamaha FC7 for Control pedal
4) Nord Tripple pedal
5) Yamaha FC7 for Organ Sweel
6) Sustain pedal BIS for the NL2X and D50 (which means that I could sustain my second and third tier from any foot, they go through a DIY sustain box with two inputs and 3 outputs...)
7) Moog EP3 Expression Pedal for the NL2X

And I still use the wheel for morph or whatever I need and the volume control Pot of some sort with Extern section....
But I agree, anytime I have a complicated set up I draw a schematic before starting to program the stage 2....
