Bad/Broken/Loose/Squeaky Click Key on NS2EX

Postby Dragan Markovic » 10 Oct 2015, 16:24

Hi everyone! :)

I've just registered and have a quick problem/question for you in hope than you might help me out before I die of reading through thousands of previous posts.
Today I got my NS 2 Ex and I am very satisfied with everything I've found out so far and I hope I will enjoy it soon enough. :keyboard:

However, after the initial impressions I've noticed that one key is a bit 'loose'. It sounds as if it was scratching against something on it's way down and back and there is also a 'click' sound when I press down the key.
It's Bb 4 - right there in the middle range, so It is going to be used a lot. It's action seems a bit loose, too. It is not so 'firm' as the other keys seem to be. Velocity sensitivity seems functional, but it is somewhat lighter.

The noise it produces is very loud and noticeable.

There are several other keys (mostly black keys) in the upper two octave that are slightly different in action than the rest of the keyboard and the produce some 'scratching and clicking'.

Again, I've just unpacked the keyboard, it is brand new.

What do you think ? :)

I've got the same problem with one black and a white key, dunno the tones now,

There's absolutely no issue for playing behavior, no lighter action, nothing,
JUST the sound, which is totally annoying when I don't use earphones or loud speakers

But I don't really want to send it in... Can't live with it anymore :keyboard:

Probably best to get it exchanged for another one right away. Of course the last thing you want to do after finally getting one is to give it back and be without, but in the long run you'll be happier with one that doesn't have any problems.

Thank you for your replies.

However, upon further inspection and more thorough playing and practicing, I've noticed other glitches with more keys, besides the scratching found in several black keys.

Several white keys seem to ''fall'' and click even on mpiano and mforte velocity. When played even gently, the action of those keys is noticeably different. It gets in the way of playing now that I've noticed it.

There are several white keys that exhibit this click noise and have different velocity response in contrast to normal keys which are firm and respond perfectly even to fff
These problematic keys are: A2, C3, F3, A3, C4, A4, Bb 4(original problem), C5, huge difference between C5 and C#5, D5, F5, G5, E6, B6, A7, E8

So, obviously, that's a lot. I wouldn't even mention it if it was only a key or two.

I have been using a similar keybed with my Kurzweil PC3K8 (Fatar TP100) and can say that the consistency of the velocity response and general feel/quality found on those keys is a level up when compared to the ones on NS2ex that I've just unpacked. Even after 2yrs of gigging and constant playing.

It really shouldn't happen in this price range and reputation level and I may be forced to return the unit. So sad. :(

Exactly. But I was hoping that some of you guys have already experienced this and solved the problem without much hassle.

I am also hoping that someone from Nord can shed more light on the subject.

It's not a problem I've ever seen reported on the forum before this. Nord actually have a system of calibrating the keyboards individually, so if you've got a number of keys that are giving uneven velocity response due to what sounds like mechanical problems, then it seems likely that whatever is wrong will be far beyond any simple home fix. I don't want to sound like a Nord fanboy, but I can't imagine that it could possibly have left the factory in such an unsatisfactory condition.

For interest, Nord go through every single key on the keyboard, measure the individual velocity response of the keys, then burn and install a custom chip for each keyboard that corrects and compensates the velocity response for each individual note. Seriously. (Whether they do this for all the keyboard types, or just the piano-action keyboards I don't know). In case you've ever wondered why Nords are so expensive...well, ya gots to pay fer quality.

Hi and thanks for your reply.

I really like the keyboard, it is great and offers much.

Don't know much about their calibrating process, but I'm sure that any human hand could identify this.
Regardless, doesn't Fatar construct the keybeds themselves then ship those to Sweden?

Exactly.

Anyway, today I'm carrying it back to the dealer and we'll see how that goes. :shifty:

Similar thing with my Stage 2 - only the C1 (and only this key) makes a clicking sound when pressed. But only when it is pressed at a certain spot on the key (quite in the middle...). Really strange... o.O But it is not really disturbing so I'm keeping it. ;-)

I do feel for you, it's a horrible thing to have happen.

Unfortunately, while it's true that
