Assign Two Notes To Single Key???

Post by rickbryant »

have a nord stage 2 and am setting up a program for toto's africa. already programmed the synth/brass sound that's used to play the main chords throughout the song. now trying to set up the lead sound that plays after each synth/brass section. was watching a video of toto in concert playing africa and noticed that david paich plays the lead parts hitting one key at a time which produces two notes simultaneously. is it possible to program the ns2 to produce two notes (for example an F# and a C#) when hitting only a single key (for example an f#)???

You need 2 oscillators to do that and the NS2 as only one osc. So, you have to make a sample or buy a NS3 ;)
Actual synth: Nord Modular G2 - Nord Stage 3 73 - Virus Ti2 - Peak - Prophet 6
Before: Nord Lead 3 & 4, Stage 1&2, Wave, Virus C, DSI Tetra, P12, and few others...

Yes, you can do that in the NS2 by using the "dtn" function in the oscillator section of the synth. That function actually detunes a 2nd "hidden" oscillator.

Here is an example of that technique, two notes on one key for the beginning of Turn Me Loose by Loverboy:

How funny…

I am currently setting up my Nord to play Africa as well.
Without opening the thread, just from the title, I was thinking about the detuned fifth for the kalimba.

thanks so much to everyone who responded! i was able to dial in the 'dtn' function and it works great with the analog wave forms. however, i downloaded a 'kalimba' sample patch from nord (http://www.nordkeyboards.com/sound-libr ... percussion) which i'd like to use for this and am not able to figure out how to get the 'dtn' function to work with a patch. Is this possible??? can this be accomplished with the Nord Sample Editor???

The DTN function is available only for the Virtual Analog waveforms, yes.

For Samples you need to resample the .nsmp into .wav files, then

a) merge them in pairs according to the detune desired, using an audio editor (such as Audacity) then use Nord Sample Editor to build a new .nsmp (using those merged .wavs)

b) build a .nsmp where the .wav samples are assigned to a different key than the original pitch, depending on the transpose desired (you will have to use 2 synth sections to get the final result in this case, but with the advantage to be able to manage the transposed sound individually e.g. to switch it on/off or have a different volume etc...)

How many oscilattors does the NS3 have?
