Sure - I'm going to finish the section on FM and then I will do something similar on analog/subtractive synthesis.
Btw any feedback is appreciated (even if it's negative!)
And now for something completely different...

I quickly read the document : impressed !
Thanks for all the details, so easy to read. Can't wait 'til I come home to make my first FM tests.

Re: FM Synth deciphered
Hi neolithic
I installed “VA - Visual Analyser 2011” on my PC and it just work fine. In standard configuration the upper window shows the waves and the lower window shows the frequencies. Just like your screenshots. It’s helpful when I can see what happens when I twiddle the knobs.
I read your draft and rebuilt both examples.
Content:
I like the style you write. It’s very entertaining. Keep it.
Good explained with the examples you made. You boil down to the essence.
Format:
By working through the examples it would be useful it has more pictures and the knobs and Buttons of the synth explanation has numbers. So you can always refer to that numbers. See my example attached.
It would be helpful when the examples are kept on one page and more look like a list.

You need to run the audio signal into your PC same as if you are recording into a DAW. As far as how to configure and use the oscilliscope software, I predict a 20 page thread coming, which I want to avoid if I can

Re: FM Synth deciphered
Hej Neo!
My NS2 is in the attic ... but I got so inspired by your FM work so I fired up the best synth there is - my reference NLA1!
It was so easy! Suddenly I had made an awesome DX7-killer patch. 2 layers of different 2-op setups, both with 4x unison = 16 ops! Phat & brilliant!
Will publish it in the Lead section of the forum soon ...
Thanks Neo, for opening my eyes! Now my dear reference NLA1 replaces both my Juno106 and the DX7 I never bought!

Re: FM Synth deciphered
This first part about FM is already very interesting. Thanks neolithic. I'm already curious for the next part, because I had on the Stage EX a very nice FM PAD which I can not build until now with the stage 2 (because I dont remeber the parameters and have no EX available).
There was a question about a software oscilloscope. I tried the Virtual Analyzer from http://www.sillanumsoft.org. Its free, looks very complex, but if You only install, start and configure Your sound input and click in the left upper corner ON it shows what I was interested: the waveform and the spectrum in two windows in a very performant way. I found a nice Youtube intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLFyZu-chsY

Re: FM Synth deciphered
This is amazing. PLEASE keep going with it. It is superbly written and an excellent intro to synthesis. The whole thing has always been a mystery to me, I never even used the FM mode on the Stage 2. NICE!

Re: FM Synth deciphered
hey - thanks for all the positive feedback everyone! Much more interest than I expected!
I will get to work on finishing the FM section, then post an updated version of that before I go to the Analog synth stuff.
I also intend to provide all the program/patches and settings for each example...

Hi,
It's already becoming a very good guide on FM Synthesis on the NS2... when it's finished, send it to the guys at Clavia
