Cosmic Girl - once again ...
Hi everybody,
I know that there was a posting about Cosmic Girl sounds, but seems that thread is closed ...
There are a lot of sounds in that song.
I would like to know if anybody got the intro sound ? sounds like an organ, but I´m not sure.
Maybe anybody has a program for the whole song ?
Thanks in advance,
Tom

Re: Cosmic Girl - once again ...
Hi,
this is a somewhat old post, but I wanted to chime in, also looking for a usable program for Cosmic Girl. I am using a mix of EP and Synth but would love to get a closer patch in particular for the Intro of the album version.
Anyone got a usable one? IN aprticular the sweep/glissando added is not easy to program, plus to get this vintage sound not obvious. It is only for one gig, but maybe someone has a usable patch?? Would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers, Johannes

Re: Cosmic Girl - once again ...
I would second the thoughts here. Seems a fairly tricky one to get right. Possibly would need some programming with the aftertouch aswel to kick in the effect manually depending on what speed the band decide to play the song? A programmed effect speed may not be as easy to manage as using aftertouch?
What are peoples thoughts on this and the sound overall.

Here is a video of someone playing this tune with a Nord Stage and a Nord Wave.
For the intro effect, he's moving up the modulation wheel on the wave.
Maybe we could hold a note with a sustain pedal to free the left hand for turning the LFO speed knob, while the right hand plays like on the video.

Hi Frantz, thanks for the link, indeed inspiring! SOme really great sounds from that Wave, in particular the Strings and Lead lines, those are also well played.
The Intro Synth is good, the chords played on the Stage however, not so sure. Sounds a bit too Synthish to me (plus the chords are not original, and not really harmonizing well , but thats just my opinion. The funny part is that he gets to the original chords later on
) Anyway, that guy gets very close, and a two board setup certainly makes things easier...just more to schlepp.

We played this tuned while I still didn't have the NS2.
Hope you can pick up some inspiration from the video

Re: Cosmic Girl - once again ...
Hi there,
I believe the intro sound is a Rhodes with a lot of phaser effect, though the original song has a (not-shallow) MkII Rhodes which is not available in the current Nord Library, and this particular Phaser effect is probably also not on your Stage 2. Myself, I use a real Rhodes for this song in particular.
The strings in the intro: I just play them halfway through the intro with a Nord Wave. You can use any of the tremolo strings: I assigned an expression pedal to the volume. Perhaps use a delay pedal, oscillate the sound and slowly increase volume and decrease delay. This is possible on a Stage 2, which I do not own, but you can probably assign Strings volume and effects to an expression pedal as well.
I play this song a lot in my band, it's a real classic one!

Re: Cosmic Girl - once again ...
Thought my post was dead
Well, pimdevente is right with the Rhodes.
I did the sound with a Rhodes and a phaser effect. It sounds almost right (imo), but the perfect Rhodes Sample is not in the library. I try to post the sound these days so everyone can try that one.
Has anybody tried to do the synth sound for the keys interlude ? Its an oldfashioned synth sound imo, any suggestions ?

If you could post the sound then that would be amazing. Really useful for someone like me who is very new to Nord

Re: Cosmic Girl - once again ...
You're true about the Rhodes, it's not in the library. Thing is, the only Rhodes MkII sampled in the Nord library is a shallow one. A 'normal' Rhodes MkII sounds different, sounds less shallow (figures, right?
).
I bought a real MkII few weeks ago and got a Small Stone Phaser effect pedal this christmas. Combined, they sound awesome and are spot on for this song.
The synth lead just after the chorus you mean? On my Nord Wave, I use a basic saw tooth (I think..), Mono Mode on mono with glide set to about 20-30%, add the Chorus 1 and I assigned the Morph weel to the frequency, for which I use the vocal type setting, finishing with a vibrato on the after touch.
This lead sound is also perfect for any song by Jamiroquai. His keyboardist also uses it in Little L and plays with the frequency a bit. That way your lead synth sounds like it's 'talking' like it's a WAH sound , or something like that. Hard to describe, haha.
If you want, I can send you my lead sound as a Nord Wave program, I guess. That should be at the end of this week, you can send me a PM if you'd like. Or I could e-mail you a demo if I have the time.
cheers!
