The Royal Grand.... update!

Post by Synthnut »

The piano sounds wonderful, but i'd fire the tuner, play octaves E and especially the G octave above middle C note......they grossly scar what is a stellar piano,,,,,,sure hoping for an update soon as this is the best piano in the library.

No, I'm not buying it, when my Steinway gets to sounding like this I get it tuned!

Agreed, the unison of E4 above middle C is slightly detuned. As in many cases you might try the L sample rather than the XL. For the Royal Grand and this particular key it also works better.

I found this on several of the grand piano sounds in the Nord Piano Library: In the XL version, where each key is sampled separately, they deliberately leave some quirks in the samples (what NordIOW just termed "raw"). In the L version, while there is some stretching of the samples for several keys, they tend to use more smoothly tuned key samples so the overall sound is a little less quirky and "smoother".

But this doesn't imply that all of the Clavia-typical oddities (which make the sounds more natural in comparison with standard Yamaha or Kawai sounds) are removed. With the Royal Grand, for instance, the rather sharp attack of C#5 and D5 remains...

It's an older piano. It's just the way it sounds in that period.
I don't know if you have seen the picture of it, but it's not really from this century.

So if you want to have a tuned piano I guess you should download one of the other available piano's.

No No No, tuning has nothing to do with age/period, maker, tone quality or resonance, acoustic or sampled. a fine grand piano sound is not supposed to have a poorly set temperment, the G4 and G5 notes played together are out of tune and dissident, it does'nt make piano sound raw, it was just poor octave stretching of two notes that would benefit from a retune.
If my tuner left my acoustic sounding like this, an out of tune octave in the middle of piano, id make him fix it, he would agree it was a simple oversite

Barretjg, that's not a picture of Yamaha S6 royal Grand!

I think Bart mixed up the Royal Grand (Yam S6) with the new - old - Steinway No. 1. :)
