Recording Nord Piano 3 sound

Postby bsmlee » 11 Nov 2017, 03:15

Hello All,

I just got my first keyboard ever which happens to be nord piano 3.

I want to record the sound I am playing and I am very noob to not know what to buy.

I currently have an Audiobox Usb audio interface which looks like this:

What cable/equipment should I buy to get a kickass sound recorded from my Nord Piano 3?

Thank you for your help in advance!

Run two 1/4" TS (tip-sleeve) audio cables between left and right (channel 0 and 1) out on the Piano to the 1/2 mic/instrument inputs on the blue side. Then run a Type B (square) USB cable between the square USB plug on the back of the Audiobox to your computer. Your computer should then see digital audio and MIDI in your DAW. You might have to fiddle around with Audio MIDI Setup if you're on a mac (and I have no idea how Windows works). The Piano is a class-compliant MIDI device so it behaves really well. The same USB cable can be used with the Nord Piano and Sample libraries to download new sounds using the Nord Sound Manager.

I loved my Piano 3 but moved onto a Stage 3 because I wanted the organ sounds, welcome!

Thanks for the response!
Just curious, but why not midi out from keyboard to a midi in of the audio interface? And for the TS cables, can i get the stereo TRS to 3 pin XLR Male cable instead? (something like this)

https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Premier-4inch-16AWG-Plated/dp/B001UJEKZ6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1510369634&sr=8-3&keywords=trs+xlr+male

Or do i have to get this?

You can use TRS but you don't need to, think of it that way. tip-ring-and-sleeve are each a signal (and one is always ground). You don't need balanced XLR connectors here at all. I use these (but you don't need to buy gold-plated if you don't want, cheaper ones are fine, it just helps with corrosion over a very long time): https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GoldInst10 and https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GoldTRS10 , and for my USB cables, I use these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BC ... UTF8&psc=1. (The XLR would be potentially interesting if you wanted to hook the audiobox to studio monitors like Mackie HR824s instead of recording it in a DAW.)

You don't want whatever latency that audiobox MIDI interface might introduce. If it were a multi MIDI interface you might not care but in this case, I'd just run the MIDI to your computer directly.
