really dumb basic midi question

Postby onyaw » 07 May 2015, 02:56

Hi experts,

Very embarrassed to be asking this, but, um, using midi (i'm using Mainstage on a mac laptop OS 10.10.3) how do I get the midi sound to play back through the piano 2 and into speakers (through left or right instrument cables to amp)? I can only get the midi sound through the laptop. Settings are:

USB cable into USB port on laptop and USB port on piano. I don't need another cable, right? This should send and receive
Midi channel set to USB 1
Local Off (with Local On I get only the onboard Nord piano sounds)

The 'midi' light on the piano is not coming on. When I was messing around with lesser software, I recall getting the midi light on and it working. But what's Mainstage doing differently?

Can't see an option on mac to set output to midi - it only says built in output or system settings.

What's going wrong?

You need a mixer! AFAIK the sound of your mac will never come through USB to your Nord Piano. Conect both to the mixer and play.

Hi Onyaw,

You say "midi channel set to USB 1." Which setting are you talking about? Global? Slot A? Organ B? Piano A? There are many settings available. Forum members will have an easier time helping you if you lay out a more complete picture of ALL Midi Menu settings.

Also, it is not clear what you are trying to accomplish here. As Leo said above, the Mainstage sounds will NEVER appear at your Nord's audio outputs, but I can't tell if that's what you're hoping for. You can, however, run midi sequences on the computer and have the Nord play them.

Bless,

Pablo

Pablo thanks - yes I want the Nord Piano 2 to sound like a B3, or a Rhodes or other samples or synths that are not in the Nord's piano or synth bank. The laptop is recognizing Nord input; I just need to know how to get it to play back out of the laptop - I assumed it was back through the Nord via the USB connection, rather than, say, through the laptop's headphone jack (which seems silly since there is clearly a midi light on the piano which is meant to indicate midi input, i just don't know how to get that working). The USB 1 refers to the port selected in the midi menu on the Nord. Maybe I just need to setup a mixer in Mainstage to send back to the piano? For easy software its a little complicated

There's no way to do that! Pablo?

As far as I know, the Nords produced so far do not support USB for sound output.
Use the computer audio output.

I don't think so either. The USB is for midi, there is no "audio over USB" implemented in the Nord.

okay, thanks. well I thought it was weird because when I was messing around with other midi software on an old ipad, i think it did let me play back through the camera connector kit which was a mini-usb. but i must have been wrong about that (even more confused then). no problem its easy enough to go from 3.5 mm jack to instrument to my PA. thx again - I can't wait! i'm told people love Mainstage for this
