"Piano Failure"

Postby cphollis » 01 Sep 2016, 03:46

All my Nords have had zero problems for many years, but this evening I had my very first glitch, thankfully at rehearsal. We're talking about a fleet of Nords here, so sooner or later something had to happen ...

My Nord Piano 2 took an awfully long time to boot, displayed an error "Piano Failure", and then was lifeless. After a few reboots and some patience, I finally got it to make sounds, although some piano voices were inaccessible. I got through the rehearsal AOK, although it was tense there for a few moments.

I am hopeful this is only a software corruption, and can be resolved by simply re-imaging the Nord Piano with a fresh OS and piano samples. These are software-defined machines, and things can happen.

Worse case would be a failure in the hardware itself. I'll spend some time this weekend to find out which it might be.

Pablo, what's the best way to contact you if it proves to be the latter vs. former?

Thanks in advance

-- Chuck

To follow up.

Finally got time this weekend to set everything up. Same error message on power up, but eventually came up with two missing acoustic piano voices. Upgraded to v1.20. Plugged in Nord Sound Manager, and it politely showed two of the piano voices as having checksum errors, would I be so kind as to delete them? I did, and now boots cleanly.

What caused the checksum error in two of my piano files? I don't know, and -- truthfully -- I don't care. It could have been electrical, it could have been cosmic rays. It really doesn't matter. Stuff happens. The Nord handled the software error gracefully, and recovery was a breeze.

I'm now unloading and reloading all of my piano voices. This time around, they are all "small" models because (a) I like a lot of choices, and (b) no one can hear the nuances of the larger models in the fog of war during a live gig. Six grands and four uprights -- that'll keep me busy.

This way, if there's another checksum error, it will likely take out only a few out of many piano voices vs. half my arsenal. That is, if I see the error again.

All is well in Nord land.

I absolutely LOVE the "fog of war" phrase and with your permission may borrow it in future.

THanks for your followup report!

I'm glad you were able to resolve your issues Chuck.

I agree whole heartedly about using "S" piano samples. String resonance, long release and "fully mapped keyboard" are all lost in the din of live music. I've gone to using only S piano samples in my Electro 3HP. The benefit is that I'm getting the joy of the newer pianos in the library and extending the useful life of my primary gigging instrument. As I made the change, absolutely nobody said "Hey Mike, your piano sound seems to have less detail. Did you do something different?" And I work with two big bands and a fusion group.

I'm certainly not the first one to use that phrase, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fog_of_war although I use the expression often to describe to people what it's like playing a gig where you're not exactly 100% in control.
