Re: Nord Piano 3 Key knocking noise

So after a month and a half of loud knocking noise from the keybed upon release, I contacted Sweetwater and they are looking into it. They have told me that a couple of other customers have had similar problems and their 'fix' has worked for them. I think that it's simply, a small amount of felt used to dampen the hammers as they fall back. A thicker more durable felt should be the way to fix the noise issue. My sales engineer has told me to wait (before I send my NP3 back to Sweetwater) until he gets the parts and a response from Nord. I was really about to just trade it in for the upcoming Roland RD2000, but didn't want to have to wait 2 months until I have a stage piano. Plus the Nord's weight (lighter) and dimensions fit in my Gator hard shell case that I paid a pretty penny for. We'll see how this pans out. If anyone has had the same problem fixed, please share your experiences.

After two months of fairly light usage, I'm getting this noise on a couple of keys. Kinda interesting in that it shows which keys I play most frequently! Not a big issue when playing very legato, but shows up on the staccato notes. And of course is much worse when playing with headphones.

It basically sounds like a production problem that they have probably already corrected at the factory with a different pad. So this will basically affect all the early adopters and sort of begs for a recall.

Pablo, any chance of an orderly fix for units manufactured before xx/xx/xx, or is this going to be a one at a time thing?

Well third time was not a charm. Sweetwater has great customer support and it's not their fault. I received a replacement unit from them and after a couple of days I noticed that slap back noise on quick return of the keys. The loud knocking noise wasn't there at first but started on a couple of keys and I knew where it was heading, so back in the box it went. This is certainly a Fatar problem that Nord needs to disassociate from quickly. It makes Nord look bad and they make great products. I wish Nord could work out a deal with Yamaha or Roland and use their actions somehow. Anyway I exchanged my 3rd NP3 for a Roland FP90 and am now back to playing music. Sorry for the unhappy ending to my Nord family : (

I can see how this could really be frustrating. Two questions: 1) Were you aware of the retrofit "fix" with the thicker felt pad? 2) The knocking noise aside, how would you compare the keyboard feel and action of the Roland FP90 to the NP3 ?

Yes I am aware of the thicker felt remedy and I believe my unit had it. Thus I didn't really notice much knocking noise upon release like my second unit. However, the "secondary" quick realease noise problem was occurring. I believe one of the forum mates here, OG3playsnord mentioned how the rubber grommets between the key and hammer mechanism wear out prematurely and create this "snap back" noise. Either way this is unacceptable for a $3K instrument and I'm done!

The action of the FP90 is smoother, quieter and more predictable in terms of motion. Th ivory and ebony simulation is also nice along with the escapement. It simply feels more grand piano like. The motion of the NP3 is pretty good too, but the Fp90's action simply outclasses it.

Rhodie that's a huge drag and major hassle man. Really sorry to hear you had to go through all that. And 3 times no less. Can't say you didn't give make a huge effort to make it work for you.

Yes, at any price that is unacceptable. It just hurts that much more when it's 3K. :(

Sounds like you're happy with the Roland. I played it briefly and thought it was nice as well , although I did favor the RD2000 over it. But it's hard to beat those internal speakers - turn the thing on and just start playing , no need for phones or monitors. .

Enjoy.

Yeah Dave I really wanted this to work. I just couldn't anymore. Yes it is great to just turn the thing on and play. Btw I have a strong feeling that the FP90 and RD2000 are using a very (if not same) similar modeling technology. I've noticed that the default FP90 with the ambience feature enabled doesn't sound as great as I would like because the 3D headphone is enabled by default. However if you like the ambience feature (reverb) I strongly suggest you turn the 3D headphone feature off. When that's done after hearing the RD2000 piano demos, they nearly sound identical. I think it's a marketing technique to mention the V-Piano inside of the RD2000, because the Supernatural modeling technology is also V-Piano technology.

But yeah Dave maybe if Nord works out a deal with Roland or Yamaha for one of their premium stage piano actions, I'll pick up a Nord again. Or maybe Nord might make a Nord stage rack or something.

I bought the Nord piano 3 in September 2016. After some concerts (3 weeks) 2 keys made a loud click sound. I brought it back and they gave me a new one. 2 weeks ago it happens again ! Now 3 keys are making the same sound! (C2,C3,B6) so they said to bring it back again for repairs.

Obviously it appears to be a structural design flaw or a production flaw of the series.

I'll wait what will happen when I get it back but after 2 times I don't think repairing will help the problem.
I'm very happy with the sound quality of the NP3 and it would be a shame if I have to look for another piano.

Hi there,
Is there players that don't have this issue ? Someone using his NP3 for month with no keybed click sound ? It's a forum so it's normal to read complains, asking for solution but perhaps, some of NP3 are absolutly keybed soundless ? Maybe it was the first ones produced ?

Thanks

I have been told that NP3 keybeds manufactured AFTER serial # PD11184 have a newer thicker felt pad installed in the lower chassis to prevent the clacking noise. My NP 3 keybed definitely had multiple keys producing a loud clacking noise upon quick release developing after several months of moderately heavy play. The defect was corrected by retrofitting this thicker felt strip (under warranty at a local repair shop) and thus far seems to have fixed this annoying issue. Hopefully this will last- long term. I'm back to enjoying this wonderful instrument.
