Nord piano 3 as a controller

Postby Marcelo Viana » 06 Jul 2016, 01:18

Hi guys, my first post.
i'm very interested into buy the new nord piano 3.
But in my workflow would be nice if it allow me to as example take one or two parts of the split and set it to another midi channel, as example i can set the low part of the split with a piano from the piano section, and one pad from sample sinth section in layer mode, and the upper part of the split without any piano 3 sound, just another midi channel(since i consider all nord sounds on channel one, 2 to 16). this way i can use Virtual instruments from my pc without any nord sound messing up in my solo.
Not that i don't want to use the sounds that came with the keyboard, i'll use most of them i think, just some very specific samples that have a lot of diferent sounds and different samples triggered by keys that make hard to transfer to the piano 3 memory.
I read the manual but it really didn't help.
So anyone, thanks in advance.

With the NP 2 (don't kow if the NP3 is the same but I expect so) you only get 2 zones, one for piano and one for samples. What I have done for a couple of splits where I wanted only a VST sounding on the right side, was do a piano/sample split with my desired split-point, then turn the volume of the sample all the way down and save that as a patch. Then I map the VSTs to that silent section of the Nord. (from my computer, lots of ways to split VSTs)

Another very flexible but not so expensive solution: duct tape a CME X-key on top ...

Also you may want to try the NP3 action first, to see if it suits your playing style for non-piano sounds. I find playing organ parts on the NP2 difficult, I go to another controller for those types of sounds, and keep the NP2 for pianos/epianos/pads etc.

Marlowes LOL, but you and dhbp-nord are probably right, even having workaround(thank you dhbp-nord, really apreciate) the way is to have another key for the job.
The thing is i hate a set up with many keyboards, It's nice for just play, but i'm a singer too, and i think it cover myself, besides the fact that just two keyborads if placed very close could not be a big deal.
Anyway, if i can do with only one 88 key the better.
My first atempt was RD 800 from roland, it have also a good keybad(3 sensor) and work great as a controller with up to four split points, also have two independent midi out, so i can controll up to 32 midi channel, for me it help a lot.
One can say Done you found your piano. But since i hear the nord piano 3, any other is over to me. Damm nord why you did it to me?

yes, good advice, but since i purchased the korg triton studio 88 keys back in 2003, i never go back, for me always 88 keys fully weight, i play everything with this kind of keybad withou any issue.

but how do you do this? like in ableton...how would you "map" the muted sample zone? i am so confused with this type of stuff....like why are there 16 midi channels? isnt that how you send the split midi notes ? like zone 1 is midi channel 1 and zone two is midi channel 2?

The Nord Stage MIDI Tutorial
It's for nord stage, but the process is basically for any keyboard.
