Jazz quartet videos with NP2

Postby Dave Ferris » 25 Oct 2013, 07:27

Someone sent me these the other day. I didn't even know anyone had recorded this. It's last year at this coffee shop in Studio City...Peets. The trumpet player and I have done it off and on for a few years with different bass player & drummers. It's a very informal type of thing where Howie just calls tunes. Basically it's kinda like whoever can make it just shows up.. ;) Haven't been there for awhile though.

It's typical lame youtube, camcorder/iPhone mic sound/quality/balance, but the playing is pretty good I feel if you can get past the bad sound. The Nord Piano doesn't sound all that great here, but I think any digital piano wouldn't have fared much better given the recording circumstances.

Armando Compean -Bass
Richard "Dick " Weller- drums
and me. :)

Nice playing!

I thought everything got a bit muddy due to the room and low tech recording, but the Nord Piano's highs were nice and clear. Which piano sound were you using, Dave?

Thanks everyone for the nice words, appreciated.

Michael, it's been about a year since this particular video was taken and while I don't specifically remember the piano at that particular moment--I usually go between 2 piano samples. I don't think the Fazioli sample was available at this time last year...but maybe I'm mistaken. So chances are, I might have started out with the Bosendorfer XL but because of the sucky acoustics ended up with the Bright Grand XL. And yes with the glass window backdrop and tile floors, it's a recipe for brutal sound. Even with my $3500 speaker/di-preamp setup that I use.

But today I use the XL Fazioli and then if things start getting a little loud, change to the Bright Grand L.

Great playing! And your piano sounds pretty good through your speaker setup despite the difficult room situation.

Thanks. Yes if you listen with phones or decent monitors the sound is bearable. In person of course the sound was much better...even with the terrible acoustics in that room.

Hi Dave, you are a great pianist. I also generally play jazz in trio with bass and drums. I have a Nord Piano 2 and use exactly your same sounds, bright grand and Fazioli grand. The same choice. (Sorry for my english, i am italian)
Enrico.
