Grado SR60, they are almost falling apart after 15 years. But (after getting HD650's) found they have a very direct sound, it feels like the sound is pumping in your ears like no other phones. Bought the HD650 to upgrade to "Studio grade" phones. But somehow, they feel more like you are listening in a box as the sound feels further away and put more pressure on your head. The HD650 low frequencies (bass/drum) are much much less than on the SR60 as well. not sure this could be due to the difference in impedance as my HP out is a Focusrite Scarlett. Probably will go Grado again, they are also easier for that impedance. Listening pleasure is one thing, for monitoring and recording you may chose different You may end up for a pair for each or collect HP's to experience the differences. will keep the HD650 though for reference but always find myself using the SR60 for listing pleasure.

Presumably these recommendations would suit the nord stage 2 ex.
I'm after comfortable studio-monitor-esque headphones for playing.
I was wondering if these recommendations would be suitable when connecting the headphones directly to the headphones output of the nord stage 2ex without using an amp.
Or would I need preamped headphones?
I'm quite new to this

Nord itself can power the headphones, maybe a headphone with really high impedance will need an amp, but im currently using the Sennheiser HD598 without amp and it sounds excellent, and with a really high volume.

Used Grado SR60 for years and recently bought a pair of HD650 to have a "professional" headphone. However, still prefer the low cost Grado, more direct, more bass, more comfort (specially with wearing glasses), lighter and very simple and easy to repair (DIY) construction. The HD650 might be more natural, but I feel more like listening in a box or from a distance while the Grado puts the sound just right at your ears. There is probably something wrong with my ears because the HD's costs a lot more or .. there are others with the same experience so that I am not an outlier, that would be great news.

I'm leaning towards the akg k271 pro, however I fear it might need extra amplification even when connected to the headphones out jack. has anybody had any experience with akg?
second on the list the sennheiser hd598

Hi !

I'm now using AKG K712 Pro and before that the Sennheiser HD598. When playing acoustic piano's on my NP2, the volume control was 12 o'clock with HD598 and 1 o'clock with AKG K712.

In other words, the NP2 has plenty of power to drive these two headphones.

The HD598 are very fine headphones, but the K712 is clearly better (and more expensive) and what is most important to me, they are also much more accurate.

Greetings mi-ji

fantastic, I heard that without preamplification the k712 might lack bass, what's your experience mi-ji using the k712 with the np2? Also just to confirm are you referring to the k712 pro right?

Hi varignet!

Yes, i'm referring to the K712 pro. The old model of K712 could lack a little bass, but the new model does not. Your link is pointing to the new model and you can see this in the text:

"Improved low-end performance by 3dB for more powerful sound imaging"

The old model must have lacked these 3 dB, so they have just corrected it on the new model whitch in my humble opinion has a perfect bass for studio and for piano rehearsal.

If you want a pumping bass for disco, forget it. If you however want a linear tight bass with lots of details you're in the right spot.

On my NP2 i play only acoustic piano's (Italian and Bosie both in XL) and with the K712 Pro there is no need for any corrections, just add some reverb. They are perfect for practicing, revealing even your slightest small mistakes and when you finally hit it right its like being in heaven as the finer qualities of these mighty beasts appear as naked as you can possibly want.

I was happy with my HD598, but they are consumer grade and not studio monitors. With the K712 my Nord has revealed even more of its potential. Now it's up to my fingers to make use of it.

A better solution than the AKG K712 is obviously the real italian hardware.

I've been trying the dt880 and dt990 as colleagues at work were kind to let me borrow them.
I like the clarity of the 880 although it feels flat and uninteresting especially in the lows.
dt990 feels better, you're surrounded by sound although boomier and the mids are a bit muffled.
I'll try to get hold of akgs next.
