Additional equipment

Postby Grasoon » 18 Feb 2012, 12:04

I've owned NP for sometime now and thinking about adding something to my little home studio (it's just a room with a piano, actually :D ) I'm thinking about buying keyboard workstation at first but since making music is kinda out of my league (I just want to play other equipments sound, making some beats). I'm talking about something like the Motif or Kronos. However, more and more people just wonder why not buy an acoustic piano (more expensive but not much) I might be able to afford something likk Yamaha U serries or other brands in that price range. I'm sure love the sound of acoustic piano but not playing one equipment for a very long time might be a little bit boring (I guess) What will you guys do??? :)

As far as keyboard workstations go, I'm of the opinion that for the money they cost you can usually buy a small Mac or something and some software and have way more options of producing your music.

The Motif is the prime example here. For ~2500 euros you can buy a little Macbook and some sequencing software which is far superior than whatever the Motif can throw at you...

Good Point!
A Workstation is an option (like a 61 key KRONOS to get an (over-?)killer setup.

Option B: A Module for your additional sounds (Fantom Rack etc.)
Option C: If you're after beats, something like a Akai MPC (Pads & Sequencer plus some Synth Sounds plus sample playback) or Korg Electribe depending on the style of music you make
Option D: Ipad + MIDI rig plus some pretty good and quite cheap Apps
Option E: Spend the money on a good Audio I/O and some software

But I am sure there are dozens of different setups possible. Personally I really like the iPad solution or Notebook/PC if you want more power, as Cee mentioned!

Thank you very much to both of you for kind informative response. However, it is just a little bit surprise that both of you not recommend acoustic piano :D (especially Mr.Cee who if I can remember correctly is a "piano player" for a very long time) so I assume that NP is better than beginning level acoustic piano (not actionwise but sound qualitywise). Since I already have iPad+SampleTank+Garageband, I assume that I can do a lot of things with these for a very long time.

Thank you again to both of you

Well yeah, I would always choose the acoustic piano if I had the choice. But as far as boards go, you can't beat the NP88 for its sound and portability. Even if it's action is a little lighter (all of them are), it has (or had) a very good price point and the quality is top notch!

edit:
Plus, if you bought an acoustic grand, you'd have to invest in a serious pair of microphones if you wanted to record stuff. And then you'd be left with the NP88 just for Rhodes? Perfectly awesome board overshadowed by the grand...

I can say that I feel pretty much the same way Mr.Cee. I mean I bought NP because of its sound quality (and red color of course) and am practicing everyday with top notch sound in the industry. What more could I ask. But it's just that impulsive behavior of mine that always looking for something new (whether I need it or not)

Thank again for all you comments.

cheers!!!

Classic GAS.
That statement pretty well applies to the whole human race. ;)

Dear Mr.Hanon, I can't help but notice that you are now in England but if I remember correctly you were also in US. Are you on tour or something? If I misunderstanding pls disregard my comment. One more thing, Nore User forum is very very quiet compare to other products' forum. I guess you guys are busy playing music and making money right? :keyboard:

There aren't many things to go wrong with these instruments, maybe that's the reason ;)

But yeah I check the forums everyday, but only usually post in the NP section, as I don't own any other Nord instruments...

Hi Grasoon,
Nope, not in Great Britain. Just flying the Union flag over Sarasota, FL.
As for the forums being quiet, I quite agree with Cee, and would add that the price of admission to the Nord club is considerably higher than many other instruments.
Also, it's still a new forum, many folks have simply not found us yet "or can't google what a subdominant note is"

My time of playing out is long since over. However, I wouldn't be against working as a keyboard tech/ stage manager if the situation arose :D

Cheers, hanon
