2 slightly uneven keys on Nord Piano 3

Postby moogman » 07 May 2017, 19:29

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a used Nord Piano 3 and am blown away by the sound and feel. Totally awesome, and am coming from a Yamaha CP300 which is saying something.

2 keys on the keyboard are slightly uneven with the rest of the keys, as in they don't quite return to their full upright resting position. If I push the key up a bit it will return to that position but then it falls down slightly again as soon as I release. We're talking millimeters here, so it doesn't impact playability. However, I am slightly OCD so it bothers me a bit. Given the savings I received buying used, I think I just need to get over it.

What I am curious is if this is something normal that other owners have experienced. What I mainly worry about is if this was due to some bigger issue, like the piano being damaged internally due to shipping. It was packed pretty well but after you drop a few grand on a digital piano you want to make sure everything is 100% ok.

Thanks for indulging me, I appreciate any thoughts for current NP3 owners. :thanks:

I suggest you have a look inside or have a service tech look inside. I had a problem with mine (I bought it used also) and it turns out the previous owner had someone "mess" with the springs of some of the keys resulting in a VERY slow return of those keys. I opted to replace the keybed and it has been flawless ever-since.

It's a tough one because it seems to be working fine - but as you say I worry that perhaps it could get worse over time and happen to more keys.

How much did replacing the keybed end up costing you? I purchased from a reputable eBay dealer so I'm wondering if I should just ship it back to them for a return, which is probably going to cost $100-$150 with insurance, but may save me money if something is truly wrong.

I am bit anxious about opening the thing up but may be worth it to have a look around.

I have recently sold my CP300 and am torn between the piano 3 and the Roland RD2000. Now if the Nord had a Roland or Yamaha keybed then it's a match made in heaven!! Unfortunately I have had bad experiences with Fatar keybeds in the Kurzweils I have owned so vowed I would never buy a fatar keybed again, BUT the piano 3 sounds so great. Nord have already had to make an alteration to the keybed by adding more felt because of the knocking noise, so I would guess that your issue is Fatar linked. :(

I know how you feel. I posted a review after having the P3 for 3 months. Bottom line - the sounds just make it the holy grail. Yes - I REALLY wish it weren't a Fatar keyboard. It's just such a disappointment given how absolutely amazing the sounds are. But all in all - it's still the holy grail. The Rolands sound good but not great. The Nords are simply breathtaking. I love mine. Straight up. Good luck!
