Postby claytonrimes » 02 Aug 2011, 02:12

Having major problems with trying to load new sounds into my nord lead 3..............Iv'e done everything the manual has told me to do and I'm running out of patience! connected my midi cable up correctly, both cables to my midi connection in my pc. I am using the nord editor too load the sysex files. It comes up with the screen where it loads the files up individually, but on completion my nord doesnt contain any of the files. i have erased the factory presets from bank 8, but cant get my new sounds in! I have managed to transfer sounds from the nord to my PC but I cant load any sounds on!? I have the global midi channel set to 16.the DISPLAY does not show the message ‘Program Dump Completed’ as stated in the manual. really am in need of some expert help here guys???
many thanks

I don't have a Nord Lead 3, but I had a look at the manual. Page 126 (Program Bank Receive) describes the procedure. Apparently you first erase an entire bank, after which the NL3 starts listening for a new bank (in SysEx format) which is shown as 'Program Receive - Waiting for dump' in the display.

Here's the link to the newest manual (software version 1.20) on the Clavia site:

I have already done that from the manual.

Can you modify and safe a program from the synth itself? If you can't, it might be some global write-protect setting (or an issue with your NL3).

Also, what program did you use to send the dump? In the past I had problems sending a firmware update to my DSI Evolver. I used MIDI-OX and after I changed some settings for the 'Low Level Output Buffer' (Size = 1024 bytes, Num = 128) it worked fine. Appearently the SysEx data was being sent faster than the synth could process, so it missed some data and never saw the whole firmware image.

Maybe something similar is happening to you; maybe the NL3 is receiving data faster (or slower?) than it expects/can handle. I think the maximum speed for MIDI is 3125 bytes/sec (or something like that). The program you're using may have some setting to lower the speed. Also, I've seen recommendations to set the speed to 120 BPM (or a bit lower) for programs that use a setting like that.

The programme i am using is the nord lead editor, that I downloaded from clavia website. I'm thinking it might be my terratec soundcard midi out port. i don't think the driver is being recognized by the nord editor. My terratec dm6fire soundcard is the older style (10 years old). I can modify and save programs in the nord. i can also upload a bank to my nord lead editor from the nord module. That to me sounds like the 'midi in' on my sound card is fine, but the 'midi out' isnt functioning correctly. I guess my best option is to pruchase a new audio/midi interface, maybe even replace the soundcard aswell.

Hi! I think I've got the solution. I had the same issue, I deleted the bank information, and downloaded the whole patch bank from the manager, but it did no effect, the patches on the synth were still the same. I did this a couple of times, then just stored the single sounds from opened library by one.
(uncheck the MEMORY PROTECT ON in the synth)
In the opened manager you go to TOOLS - SEND SOUND WHEN SELECTED, so when you click the patch in the editor you can play it directly on the keyboard. Press STORE twice on the synth to replace the previous patch with new one. And do such with the whole preset bank. Not fast, but you can audit all sounds, skipping all crapy presets)

I'm using a MIDI-to-USB cable, both on nord and virus, had no problems with them.

I have excactly the same problem.

I'm dumping from sysex librarian on a mac laptop over a usb to midi cable from E-mu

Performances are transmitted shows up in display but no completion msg and bank is left empty. I don't have the sound manager as it only runs on pc, so the workaround of sending one by one is no option.

I have Memory protect off, sysex id ALL, I tried throttling transmit speed all the way down.

I tried transmitting the factory bank from official nordkeyboards website. Going slowly crazy now..!

Any hint would be appreciated

Try to fiddle around with the delay settings for Sysex in MIDIOX (delay between sysex messages etc..)
DIN MIDI Speed is not an issue. A Device should handle the MIDI DIN speed. Many older device have problems to process the MIDI sysex one after another.
Another problem can be the Host software, driver and MIDI interface. Some interfaces don't handle sysex well, Some drivers don't process it fast enough, so use slow speed and big buffers in MIDIOX.
I mostly use 1024/1024 or higher in MIDIOX. Even the latest USB MIDI based devices won't work with lower settings.
