hey I just bought a Nord rack 2LX on ebay it has arrived in seemingly immaculate condition however a couple of issues appeared well 3 actually, I paid £450 fir the unit.
OK here goes
i had to download all the patches from nord as they were not present all of the original sounds were none existent
2
the unit was out of tune by -19 so i reset that
3. there was a couple of times it seemed to make a loud crackle but it hasnt done that again and i cant be sure if it was the unit or other issues with my system
4. it randomly reboots sometimes repeatedly but will work apparently normally sometimes for 2 hours.
please can you tell me should i return it the seller says he will give full refund or should i persevere...

Re: Nord rack 2lx
what's the "L" for?
does your intermittent "loud crackle" appear in short bursts that are significantly louder than the signal the instrument was outputting at the time? if so, this suggests the need for serious component level work on mainboard.
do you intend to gig with this instrument? would a random reboot during a gig be a problem for you? (I'm thinking that the answer to that question would be 'yes')
I'm not sure what the current market value is on that synth, or even what the £-$ exchange rate is right now... If you are buying an instrument which is in need of repair, you should be paying a discounted price to compensate for the money you''ll need to spend to fix these things.

Re: Nord rack 2lx
the guy has offered me the rack 2x with the issue for £250 ? if its the main board that needs work rather than just cleaning the contacts how much approximately would be the worst case scenario ?

Re: Nord rack 2lx
I am confused, you paid £450 or you've been offered it for £250?
Randomly rebooting does not sound right... I wonder if it might be a capacitor in the power supply, but I doubt that anybody can tell you exactly what is wrong just by a description.

As Mr. G correctly said, not possible to guesstimate this meaningfully. Random reboot could be any one of several different things. Any generally speaking Nord circuit boards are treated with more respect than...hell, might as well go off on a little politically incorrect rant here for a moment...
Some (not all) other musical instrument makers have their electronics pumped out of Asian factories in mass quantities. I have worked in repair shops and seen these warranty cases come in. Respected name brand powered speakers, for example. Anything goes wrong, the entire amp module is removed and thrown in the garbage and a new one slapped in. Circuit boards are treated like toilet paper, single use and dispose. They are worth less than an hour of a tech's time. This has the unfortunate side effect of dumbing down the skills of the techs who handle these cases regularly. No doubt the fact that this is done at very low cost contributes to the resulting low quality and high failure rate of such gear.
Nord circuit boards are printed in Asia, then shipped naked to Sweden where they are populated with components, and eventually assembled into musical instruments. This results in dramatically higher quality and dramatically higher cost.
So back to your example/question -- let's suppose that it is determined that your problem is on the mainboard (which is NOT a foregone conclusion in this case, just a hypothetical), your solution is NOT to buy a new mainboard. Buying a new mainboard will be an expensive route to go. The right course of action will be to have a qualified tech examine it, determine which component is responsible for that fault, and replace that component. The person with the instrument open on the bench will be the one to make this determination and the one to estimate the cost or repair, not sight unseen forum members.
Not trying to come down on you, just explain the facts of life. There are some fault modes which might allow someone knowledgeable to pinpoint a diagnosis sight unseen and even estimate repair cost. Your situation does not fall into this category.
Bless,
Pablo
PS -- £250 sounds better than £450
