NORD lead A1 sustain vca?

Postby Chummy » 23 Apr 2015, 18:58

Why doesn't it have a Sustain parameter in the amp envelope??? that's a must in every synth!

the 2x and the 4 had it? if I want to create a sound that fades out to nothing when I keep pressing it's impossible right>?

Play with the decay
And now for something completely different...

A sound that fades to nothing is totally possible. I don't know exactly the possible length of decay, but it can be as short as milliseconds or as long as roughly one minute. An init patch with fastest attack, longest decay, and no release takes about forty seconds to fade into the noise floor and then goes on about another twenty seconds. A sound that sustains as long as you press the key is also possible by turning the decay fully clockwise (it then becomes sustain).

I thought I'd be bothered by the lack of a sustain knob, but I don't miss it.

I agree that nowaday's synths should have ADSR EGs, but what you want to achieve is not controlled by the S level, but by the D time. In addition to other EGs, when you set the D to maximum in Nord's EGs, you get no decay at all.

Sorry for my 1-liner response (I was in a hurry, not being rude) and thanks to the other guys for giving more detailed answers
A feature i'd prefer to see is a delay stage before the attack. The DSIs have it, and it's nice when you are layering different elements to make a sound

If they won't give us four knobs, what are the chances of them giving us five? ;)

You could try putting one layer through the delay FX and setting it to 100% wet.

In mono modes (can't remember if it's just in legato mode though) you get a fixed, non-zero sustain level on the amp env. It's not mentioned in the manual, but has been confirmed by Clavia as a deliberate feature.

But I agree. I find the lack of sustain level parameter annoying. I think they figure it's something that actually is not used enough to warrant its inclusion, or putting it another way, if they want to cut down the number of knobs, the sustain parameter is at the top of the list of the ones to go.

I think though that they should have put sustain in using shift+decay or something like that in that case. Although that would take the machine away from the one-knob-per-parameter paradigm. In my opinion they've already done that since there are so many functions accessed by pressing shift + a knob, although all the shifted parameters are always stepped (or on/off), indicated by leds.

I need sustain too

I think that a synth at this price should have this parameter (although it is with SHIFT+knob or only CC midi control)

It's possible to combine the mod env and LFO in env mode to create a ADSR envelope that can be applied to the filter and/or module the oscillator (pitch/detune/shape etc).
