Nord lead 4r power supply: can you use it anywhere?

Postby zahush76 » 02 Jan 2016, 17:14

I'm considering picking up a NL 4r in New York, but i myself live in Israel. The ac here is 220v - 240v.
I remember when i bought the nord stage 2 from usa it had to be open and a toggle switch between different voltage option (don't remember exactly. It was 4 years ago...).

Is it the same for the nl 4 rack? Have things changed since then? Do these puppies have an automatically alternating voltage that works whether you're in the usa or europe?

same deal --NOTE: YOU MUST ALSO CHANGE FUSE (unless you like your Nord fried)

115v = 300mA
230v = 125mA

have a 220V NL2X and using it on 110V wall power unchanged. Using a small 110V to 220V adapter. Those exist for 220V to 110V as well. Converters are small and cheap cause the NL uses not much power. No fuse/switch headaches. EU plug does not fit a US wall outlet, so safe too when I am not paying attention.

You already stated in your original post: "it had to be open and a toggle switch between different voltage option"

That's the also.

Connecting an instrument which is set to run on 230v to a 115v mains power is not a good idea, and vice versa. In fact, it's a really bad idea. Do so at your own, and your Nord's, peril.

Pablo

Indeed there are some bad converters which have only one winding and thus one common pole. It's really time Clavia starts to do what many have done for ages: universal (internal) power supplies. I have many 10 years old product that do it. These are times of people move fast around the world, it's not 1940 anymore. Best way is perhaps to change the voltage inside the unit, but it breaks the warranty opening it up. What option does Clavia give for people moving round, buy two of them ??? Come on.

Thanks. So once i recieve it - i'll open it, change the toggle switch position and replace the fuse. It's a two minute work and i'm good to go. Right?

Google and you will find....
nord-stage-forum-f3/110v-220v-voltage-selector-switch-inside-the-ns-t181.html
nord-electro-forum-f9/power-230v-into-120-v-switch-inside-t1115.html
Suspect Most Nords are the same for the power supply (as well for the hardware.) since the very early days of G, E and L's.
Perhaps watch out for pulling or damaging cables when opening it and save some money for out of warranty repairs.

I'm looking in these pictures and i see the voltage switch. I wonder where it is located on the desktop version.
Also - i can't seem to find in the pictures, where is the fuse located.

Concerning the other option - a voltage converter - is it sufficient? Or does using it also require changing the fuse inside the NL 4r?
