Nord Lead 4 Osc 1 tuning?

Post by Umbriel »

Hi,

Noob question here that I cannot find an answer to under the oscillators section of the manual. How do I edit the finetune / semitones of Osc1 as there isn't direct control as with Osc 2. Is there a hidden setting or am I being stupid? If it's hidden, why would they omit it?

Cheers..

It can't be tuned the "usual" way. Clavia obviously thinks that if you have only two oscillators, only one of them needs tuning controls, as the sound depends only on the relative (de-)tuning of one of them. And that is correct (and it's not the only synth in that regard), however as soon as you start layering, that approach seems flawed, as all Osc1 on all layers now share the same base tuning.

Apart from the global semitone and finetune in the System menu, there is a workaround, if you can spare the Mod Envelope:
Set Mod Env to Osc1 pitch, Attack to 0, Decay to infinite, then you can detune Osc1 with the Env Amount. That's the best workaround that I know of.

Same works with LFO2 to Osc1 pitch, square wave, slowest possible rate, keysync on(!). As long as you don't hold a single note longer than 18 seconds or so. :)

Anyway a general idea I usually use Osc1 not in the same octave when layering, so with a 2 Osc detuned sound, if Slot A has Osc1 at 16' and Osc2 one octave higher at 8', I use Osc1 at 8' and Osc2 at 16' on layer B, for example.
The issue is made worse by the fact that Waveforms are Osc1 only. Ah, just unison up and you don't hear a thing. ;) :/

Ah ok thanks for this, I'll try these methods out. I did wonder if there might have been a magic semitone setting hidden in a menu somewhere. Seems an odd decision to leave it out but not to worry!
