Nord Lead 2x no fuse/fuse holder

Postby Florian » 03 Nov 2012, 21:52

Hello Everybody,

some days ago my new nord lead 2x arrived.
I put the cable in and started playing for a while.
After a few days of playing i recognized some strange things.
Sometimes the nl2x restarts by itself and sometimes it changes the sounds by itself.
After taking a closer look to my new instrument i realized that the fuse holder and the fuse (next to the power switch) is missing.
The Synth runs without a fuse!!!
Can somebody explain that?
Does somebody know where i can buy a fuse holder for the nord?

Kind Regards

Florian

The synth is new, out of the box?
The distributor has fuse holders in stock, mostly.
Otherwise ask Clavia in Sweden to send one over.

Ehm... That really shouldn't happen. Could you make a picture and post it?

If it really doesn't have a fuse holder but does work, then someone must've intentionally modified the power supply to work without one. The power supplies are supplied as finished modules to Clavia, so maybe someone at the company that made those power supplies got creative and modified a defective one so it passed their own quality control. I've seen this happen before with stuff made in China (a multimeter and a small USB power supply). I don't know if the power supplies come from China though.

The Nords are hand-assembled in Sweden in the Clavia factory. If the power supply is really lacking the fuse holder but works, someone wasn't paying attention at Clavia. I find it really hard to imagine that this wouldn't have shown up during construction and quality control at Clavia. But if that is the case, I think Clavia has some explaining to do to you (the user who bought that unit). Electrical equipment lacking a fuse can be a real health hazard.

Anyway, I'm not yet convinced the unit is really lacking the fuse holder, but if it really does then Clavia needs to take a very critical look at their quality-control because this shouldn't have been possible (and multiple things went wrong).

As you can see in the pictures.

No fuse or fuse holder but it is running.

You still do not say if it is a new/used instrument, or who you bought this from.

It seems that somebody must have modified it. Is it legal/safe to sell something in that state?
I would urgently get in contact with whoever you bought it from to clear what on earth is going on.
If this was rewired it to avoid a fuse, any situation where a fuse would blow (you can read here that it can happen more often than thought) and cost nearly nothing to replace, you will most likely get a damaged circuit (and potentially a nasty electric shock?).
If they changed the location of the fuse (and it is inside now) I would still try to return it to the original state. Otherwise every time the fuse goes, you will have to open the instrument to change it.

Wow... Of course, it is still possible the fuse holder somehow got loose (something banged into it?) and is floating around inside the case.

Not good.

I bought the synth "new-old stock" from a company in Malaysia. I looks new and it came in the original package. My contact person said that he just opened it for testing.
The fuseholder is defintely not inside the nord. The Thing which holds the fuse and the fuse is missing.

What are you planning on doing? Is it even feasible to send it back? If that's not a realistic option, the best solution might be to have the missing fuse holder retrofitted in the Lead so it does have a proper fuse, of the right type. The fuse holder is of a pretty standard type, I think.

Ideally this would be done by some company that repairs Nords, but a more general repairshop (or a shop that repairs vintage equipment) could also do it. If you have the knowledge/skills/guts to do it yourself, you could also do that. The most time-consuming part might be finding the right fuse holder.

As Wout suggest, I'd contact the distributor for your region (or Clavia themselves) first.

I really think this should be solved; that fuse is there to protect both your Nord and you.

Experience in "Third World Countries" has taught me some tricks that are best not passed on. When a fuse blows, a little wad of aluminum foil shoved into the hole will allow the device to work. THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED!!!

There is simply NO WAY that the synth will work with no fuse and no fuse cap under ordinary circumstances. I'm pretty confident that close examination with a light and perhaps some magnification will reveal that someone in Malaysia "modded" your power supply to make it work. It will be a very good idea for you to inspect that closely, remove the wad of tin foil that is almost certainly stuffed into that hole, and replace it with a proper fuse and fuse cap.

Your Malaysian seller may have done this in conjunction with "converting" the operating voltage of the instrument and simply didn't have the right parts to do it correctly. Or someone simply blew the fuse and "fixed" it using their "MacGyver" technique.
