Nord Lead 2 Ground Noise Help

Post by albert »

New to the board here, hello!

I have an issue I am hoping someone here has already dealt with and hopefully has a solution to. My Nord Lead 2 rack produces a buzzing noise coming out of all four outputs whether the unit is on or off. It sounds the same as if you were to hold your finger to the end of a quarter inch instrument cable. However, not as loud thankfully. I am guessing this could maybe be resolved by making some kind of grounding modification somewhere inside the unit. I don't work with electronics at all so I wouldn't have a clue where to start.

Anyone encounter this and have a solution?

After screwing around a bit more I found that it was not the Nord but the patchbay I am using that was adding the noise. Is there a way to delete this thread?

HI Albert,
This forum is all about sharing knowledge and learning from others mistakes, so don't worry about deleting the thread. Thanks for investigating your problem further, solving it yourself and sharing your result.

I like that you went looking for other sources of noise. --With ground loops, two (or more) pieces of gear share a circuit (cables, frames, power cords, usb cable, midi port, etc.) in a way the designers didn't anticipate. Ground loops occur when at least two pieces of equipment work poorly together rather than being caused by just a single bad unit.

Badly designed or faulty equipment still exist, but it remains possible that two reasonably designed and correctly functioning pieces of gear might work poorly together. Sometimes you need additional gear (e.g., DI boxes) to get a system working without excessive noise.

Welcome to the forum!

Sounds good. Thanks for the additional info!

On a side note, i'm excited to explore the forum as I am new to it! I'm only beginning to explore the depths of what the Nord Lead and Modular equipment can do.

you will likely find more old Lead and Modular activity at Electro-Music.com than here. Not that this kind of traffic is not welcome here, but this forum is much newer than those models and most traffic here focuses on Stages and Electros, with the other models bringing up the rear. E-M.com has been around much longer and developed larger following among the old Lead and Modular buffs.
