Nord/ Fat Moog Sounds

Thanks a lot to stiiiiive, I have now a good picture of the different sounds from Moog...But sure, when I realized the size of the Roland SE02, it was out of question for me, way top small...

is there a less expensive alternative to a minimoog?

Yes, take a Slim Phatty or a Little Phatty: They have almost identical oscillators and filter ( = basic sound) like the Voyager (I had all three of them).
Then you'll get the "classic" warm Moog sound.

If you take one of the new "Subs" you'll get pretty instruments but they do have a rather "harsh" and "modern" sound. Trust me - LOL! I renounced the Sub 37 because of its sound...

Same here: I was very excited about the functions but the sound is not my cup of tea. I kept my Little Phatty.

Can any of the Nord Leads make those fat moog sounds from the 70's?

Short answer: no.

I would disagree with this judgement. I created really fat sounding moog alike leads and bass sounds with the A1R. But you won't find any of those fat sounds in the presets, neither in the factory presets nor in the artist's libraries. Most of the available Nord presets are on the thinner side and they also make way too much use of FX for my taste.

I will upload a couple of my presets once I find the time to do so.

I get phat bass from my A1 that rivals my Sub Phatty. Initialize patch,use square or triangle wave form, drop down 1 octave shift,use the LP M filter setting, use drive effect to taste, adjust filter. Very nice deep bass. Hope this helps!

also make the patch mono, and adjust the glide. Good starting point. If you want leads do the same as above,but go up an octave shift or two and add a bit of delay. Also, experiment with copying a patch to another slot and making slight adjustments to the second layer.

Good advice. That way a 3 VCO synth can easily be simulated. The only thing missing though is a fine tune option per slot. The only fine tune option I could find is in the "DET" oscillator. Or am I missing something?

Sure you can!

The Nord Lead A1 is perfect for creating those 70’s progrock synthleads...and stingmachines as well!
For the leads, just use the ladder filter (a smooth emulation of the MiniMoog filter), and the unison voice mode to fatten up the sound. The unison voicemode has three levels delivering all the fatness you’ll ever need. No need to layer programs to get there. It’s just not true.
And you will NOT get noticeable better results with something like a Moog SUB37. Believe me...I gave it a shot myself. I actually prefered the results I got from the A1, and sold my SUB37 again.
If you put it next to a vintage MiniMoog, it might sound slightly different. Shure. But remember, if you put a new MiniMoog reissue next to a vintage MiniMoog, they as well will sound different to eachother. Different is not the same as to say one sounds better than the other. Just different. Slightly different. Nothing that matters once you roll tape. And if you compare it to the sound of 70’s studiorecordings, just remember those sounds are colored from the old analog outboard stuff used for those recordings.
You will probably run it through a modern digital PA or DAW system. Obviously it will sound more clean from what you hear on Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here.
What is actually more important is, that you know which knobs to turn to create the sounds you need. If you don’t, it defenitely won’t matter if you use a vintage MiniMoog or any avarage VA synth.

Other advantages of the A1:
The awesome sounding build in effects. You’re good to go straight out the box.
It even has a gorgeous ensemble effect, which is what made the sound of classic 70’s stringmachines used in 70’s progressive rock. Like the Solina, also heavily used in 70’s rock.
In performance mode, you can have a stingersynth on your left hand, and a leadsynth on your right hand. All in one gorgeous, less than 10 kg package.

One more thing. Not everything 70’s prog is Moog. Tony Banks for example used Arp.
