NL4R Performance Mode vs. Program Mode for Live PA

Postby odnamra » 15 Jul 2017, 13:56

Hi everyone, new to the forum and Nord. Love this synth. Got the Rack version B-Stock and couldn't be happier. I'll be using this synth for Live Performances, sequencing externally from a Hardware Sequencer (Engine). I do have some questions.

Is the best mode for me to be in for a Live PA, Performance Mode or Program Mode? Should I send program change messages while in Program Mode per slot and change for every song or instead stay in Performance mode and send Program Changes on Global channel to switch performances (with patches I have already configured and set per slot), but not send program changes per patch?

The reason I'm asking is I'm a little puzzled by the behavior of Performance Mode and my inability to see the number of the patch I used, after going to another performance and then returning. It reverts to 1.1, even though the sound I'm hearing is the correct patch I have dialed up and already stored. Even then, I do notice variations in the sound when I return to that Performance, but as I understand it to change this sound, I would actually have to be inside the exact Performance, select the slot, tweak the sound and hit store for the Performance. It has no connection to initial patch I called up, once I modify it. Not sure if its something else that's causing the change in the sound and patch number showing as 1.1.

Lastly and above all else, is performance mode meant for sequencing four different slots? For instance, in Performance Mode Slot 1-Kick, Slot 2-Snare, Slot 3-Bass Synth, Slot 4 -Poly Synth and then changing performances per song?

Pardon my long-winded question and thanks for your help!

Program-Mode and Performance-Mode are completely seperate, and Programs do not influence Performances in any way, even if the Performance was created by using stored Programs. If you alter and save a Program, a Performance where you before have used that program (initially) to create the Performance - the Performance will not change. You cannot accidentially ruin a performance that way.
Liekwise, if you want to change something in a Performance, a sound in a Slot, then you need to be in Performance mode and afterwards save the Performance.

Yes, Performance mode works good in the way you describe it. The only drawback is for example, if you have, say the same bass-drum in most of your performances in Slot A, and you want the modify the sound, you have to do it for all performances. (But you can copy-paste).

I use Program-Mode to just design sounds without specific (song-)context, but Program-Mode for everything live or Song related, where I usually adjust the former programs to fit together. (But I do not use more than the 4 Slots (= one Performance) per song)
I guess using Performances is a bit "safer" live.

I think there are users who use Performance-mode exclusively (think to save a "4-Osc sound"->layer), it's actually just a matter of organizing things and preferences, as they behave the same in regard to sequencing and playing.

Thank you. I guess also what's happening is when I modify the sound in performance mode, the program now indicates 1.1 Instead of the initial patch I dialed up in that performance to indicate this is no longer that patch and it is not tied to that sound.
I still wished it showed me the initial patch I dialed up. The reason I would like to see that patch is that even though I have modified the patch and it is no longer connected sometimes I modify it beyond recognition in performance mode and want to return to that initial patch and can't remember what it was. I've been having to write the patch number down..

Something else, in performance mode is there a change I can cause that makes all my performances change? Not only is it a global thing, it is a parameter change for all performances, like Amp Decay so now all your songs are staccato chops haha
Is happened to me twice and had to restart Nord.A knob I turned, on Engine.

Hmm.. not really an idea. Decay, Arpeggiator On, Impulse Morph, but what could affect all slots at once?
