Lead A1 as midi controller

Postby shark » 12 Sep 2016, 15:42

Hi all, tech question:

I'd like to use my Lead A1 also as a cotroller to my JV-1010 (for piano sounds) mainly during rehearsal so I don't have to carry too much stuff. I can't seem to figure out a way to designate one of the four slots as the exclusive "midi" slot to run the jv-1010 over. Ideally I'd like to use 3 slots each for a different sound coming from the Lead A1 and one slot for the JV, but unfortunately once I connect the JV it is on all 4 slots. Any way to designate just one slot for midi? I currently bypass the problem by turning down the volume of the jv each time I use a Lead slot but it is hardly ideal.

Thanks.

... but with a stereo volume pedal you could mix "on the fly" while playing?

Thx Marlowes, yeah I figured as much after reading the manual but I hoped some whiz kid might have a workaround or something. Which brings me to what I think is a serious limitation: who needs all these seperate midi ins and no individual midi out? Never mind, the lead a1 and I were not made for each other I guess.

The Nord Lead A1 was designed to be a synth. They threw some basic midi controller functionality into it for convenience, but it was not designed to take the place of a full-fledged midi controller.

Being able to assign different slots to respond to different midi channels is HUGELY useful for anyone interested in sequencing multiple parts using multiple voices.

Thx Pablo, I see.

Being old school myself all the music I make comes from my fingers so I just need an instrument that does what my fingers ask it to do, sequencing, computer generated music and lip sync are not what I do. Still it would have been nice to be able to hook one add-on that complements the A1 with sound it is unable to provide (like pianos and strings). My workaround works ok at rehearsals, I have the electro at gigs so no pbm there.t

I, too, am fond of the JV-1010 for compact and decent quality sound source that's easy to program...but gave it up when I went all Nord, donated to a music school program in Trenchtown...

Yeah man, I sold mine when I bought the Electro and immediately regretted it!
Found one recently on craigslist for €50 including original powersupply (how rare is that?!) and midi cable. The strings are just so sweet and being half rack you can just put in a bag and carry it anywhere.
I'm hopeless nostalgic for 70/80s stuff and sounds! That's why I bought the Lead but am still struggling to make it sound like I want it to as you well know...

I have a Roland XV-5050, and I use it with my Electro 3 serving as its MIDI controller. I am an huge user of custom splits and overlays, including some songs where I use a Roland PK5 footpedal MIDI controller to fire off multiple notes at once while both of my hands are tied up playing the sax. I always put the split definitions in the XV itself.

How do you assign a different midi channel to each of the 4 slots? Are they auto assigned 1, 2, 3 &4 or what buttons or combo of buttons does this?
The manual is slightly obtuse in reference to this? I am trying but all I get is the G function which is the Global midi assign!

thanks in advance
