How to make Wavetables more alive in NL4?

Postby rickk » 02 Mar 2017, 13:51

Guys,

i have the question, while making pads with wavetable do you have some tricks to "move" them so they would not be so static? In virus we have WT position or interpolation or some other parameters that you can modulate. How do you make wavetables in NL to be more alive?
Slight amount of lfo on the pitch or to the filer is standard thing that coming to my mind, any other?

You could just modulate CC49 and rhythmically change the wavetable selection?

How to make Wavetables more alive in NLA1!

Postby Marlowes » 02 Mar 2017, 20:43

Watch on youtube.com

My NLA1 steps through some wavetables: CC 30, 0 to 46, with Logic Pro X. The rest is live audio - no MIDI. Added pads with NLA1, some ambient Blofeld and Spark beat.

Thanks for tips :thumbup: But i am hardware guy so you have to tell me how to modulate this, as far as i uderstand i can't do this inside my NL so i need to use my DAW (my only keyboard is NL4, rest are racks). I use Reaper, so i set up new midi track, set midi send to NL, than what? :) How to choose CC49 or CC30?

@Rickk:

Sorry, I am not familiar with Reaper - modify the subject line on your first post to see if someone with Reaper experience will answer ...

I think Marlowes switches the waves from the sequencer, (is that what so M? very nice, by the way). I do not think you can do 'wavetable sequencing' like in the early wavetable synths where the sound is made from a sequence through single cycles of the waves stored in the wavetable.

Ok, i managed to change wavetables from DAW but it would be beter having something like LFO to change it.
It would be great if Clavia could implement it in next OS update (unless Clavia stoped improving NL4).

It is a bit misleading and unfortunate, that Clavia called them "wavetables", as in "wavetable synthesis" it is fundamental that the selection of the waveform in the wavetable can be modulated. It can't in the NL4 and A1, so it is better to just speak of "waves", as users typically expect a "sweep" parameter, when offered "wavetables".

Anyway OT, you can at least "sweep" between two different waves with an lfo, if you use two slots, Wave 1 in Slot A and Wave 2 in Slot B, then set LFO 1 to triangle, keysynced, and routed to Amp on both slots. Exact same (slow) rate on both Slots. Then choose a Mod Amount on Slot A and use the same negative Amount on Slot B. The sound will gradually sweep between Wave 1 and 2 at a constant volume.

Edit: Eventually the base volume has to be adjusted to match
