Defected Delay - Nord Lead A1

Postby John1 » 20 Mar 2018, 10:56

Hello,

Two weeks ago I bought a Nord Lead A1. Everything sounds great, however, it looks like there's a bug in the delay. From time to time the delay creates distorted sound with pitch changes. It happened for programs and initial sound as well.

Things I tried to do:
1. Update the Nord's OS to the latest one even I already had the latest one. It resolved the issue, but after a few days, it happened again.
2. Format and restore via factory settings. The same as above, is fixed the issue, however, a day after it came back again.

The Nord is connected to my computer with USB cable through a USB port extender, so in order to deny the possibility is related to the USB port extender, I just unplug it and again, after two days the issue came back again.

Before I buy this synth I heard a lot of recommendation about Clavia's reliability. I tried to contact them a few times, but no one gets back to me yet.

Hope to get your assistance here.

Thanks in advance

Was it second hand?
Maybe a corroded delay tempo potentiometer which starts to change it´s values when it´s getting warm inside?
Does the distorted sound stop when turning the pot a bit?
Otherwise it could be a defective SMD part in that area.
Kind regards,
Herbert

Hi Puukka,

Was it second hand? - It's a new one bought from the store.
Maybe a corroded delay tempo potentiometer which starts to change it´s values when it´s getting warm inside? - When I switching the knob it works absolutely OK.
Does the distorted sound stop when turning the pot a bit? - No
Otherwise it could be a defective SMD part in that area - Ohh damn! I hope it doesn't. Any specific reason you think is a defective SMD part?

Most of the times, it happens when I turn the device on. It's funny that updating or formatting the NL A1 is a temporary fix, but it works for a few days.

Appreciate you reply.

Thank you very much!

To me that doesn´t sound like a software bug, more of a bad soldering point or defective part that reacts with temperature.
Your shop should return it and order another one for you.

Kind regards,

Actually yesterday I found the cause for this wired issue. It was the cheap USB port extender I used with. When unplugging it, the issue came back, but when plugging it in again, the issue fixed. Currently the solution is to content it directly to the computer and buy a better USB port extender in the future.

Again, thanks for you assistance Pukka
