It will be helpful if you offer some description of what it was you were trying to do when you got this message...along with identifying what Nord instrument you are using, what OS is loaded on it and what version of Nord Sound Manager you are running...

Sorry for the lack of information. NE5D.
Recent History:
Backed up NE5D prior to OS update ... no problem
Updated OS (1.28)
Updated Sound Manager
Did some sound manager organization. Deleted 3 remnants from a previous song list that were not on NE5D, but showed up in Sound Manager (per Forum suggestion)
Attempted multiple backups after the above with everyone failing. Tried switching USB cable, tried re-installing OS update, tried uninstalling sound manager and re-installing it, tried a different computer for the backup and all resulted in the same error message:
"Upload Failed: CRegFileRead Failed: File Read error (8)
I then thought that perhaps what I deleted previously from the sound manager (song list remnant) may have been an issue.
Solution: restored backup from before the OS upgrade, sound manager update & song list remnant delete. Note: following the restore, the song list remnants no longer existed. Following the restore, I attempted a backup again and it was a success. Lastly, I did some sound manager organization, ,followed by a backup and it, too, was successful.
Just sharing my experience, though all is good now and still clueless as to why this happened.
