The most natural Tremolo for the Wurlitzer 1. Electro 5D

Postby Althea_Told_Me » 26 Jan 2018, 22:46

What setting do you think is closest to a natural Wurlitzer 200A? TREM 1, TREM 2 or TREM3? Trying to get the closes to classic sounds for all Electric pianos.

Also what is your favorite rhodes sound? If there is a closes to classic.

Any of the TREM settings with the same speed/rate. The Wurlitzer 200A has variable depth, but the speed/rate is fixed. I just sold my 200A last year, so I can't tell you where the rotary dial "RATE" position needs to be, to match a real 200A, but you can find a recording with Wurli and dial it in. Maybe someone has already gone through this exercise and could chime in.

As for which Rhoades sample to load... it really depends on your taste, needs and available piano sample memory available. I have EP5, EP6 and EP8 loaded onto my NE5D-73.

Try to match this Wurly sound. One of the most soulful sounds ever recorded.

When I think of “soulful Wurlitzer”, this is where I go:

Donny Hathaway’s “The Ghetto” Live.

Plenty of tremolo, and what a performance...!

Ha ok, that scared me, I was listening carefully to it and was wondering why I cannot hear the tremolo? Have I lost that much hearing with my loud guitarists band?

I played this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwb4po8vrLw, loaded the mp3 in audacity, then found a section where you hear the tremolo, selected a range of audio (that gives you the length in ms) and counted how many cycles there were in that section (you can see it in the wave form in the audio track). Divide that length by the number of cycles and gives you the length of 1 cycle in ms. Divide 1000ms by that number to get the frequency of the tremolo (answer: 5.37Hz). :geek:

Using this excellent reference recording provided by @Analogika, I came up with a tremolo RATE of 3.9 or 4.0 Khz - TREM 1 for light tremolo or TREM 2 for heavy tremolo. TREM 1+2 (TREM 3) seems deeper than I remember my Model 200A being able achieve at maximum depth and it seems to have an adverse effect on the sound/frequency, not just the amplitude.

Good point. Here's another classic Wurly sound, the EP track from Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through The Grapevine." Is there tremolo on this? I don't hear it. This thread is making me reconsider using tremolo on my Wurly sounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZamJ7MrVUA

Er. Have you listened to the Donny Hathaway track above? That’s tremolo.

There is absolutely no variation in volume on the Marvin Gaye track. Great distortion though. :-)
