Something Is Loose Inside NE3

Postby DJKeys » 16 Oct 2011, 00:29

I just finished a day gig about an hour ago. When I took my four month old NE3 off the stand to put it away, I heard something rolling around inside. It is also rather large, not the sound made by a small screw, but something much larger. The unit was playing fine. I am going to attempt to remove the cover and see what it is.

How difficult is it to remove the cover?

Any ideas or suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks-

OK, the cover was easy to remove thanks to another post from Johannes. Here is a picture of what was loose. I just tested the unit and it seems to work fine, but it looks like this was connected to something and broke off. I have never even slightly banged the keyboard, so I am a little concerned.

Anyone know what this is? I sure don't.

Thanks again-

Hmmm... I just checked all 61 keys, they all feel the same, none of them feel different. It does look like a weight, though. I guess I could take it apart again, disconnect the ribbon cable from the main board and see if that is what it is.

I will investigate more, thanks-

I would also guess it's a key weight (but I would ask Nord on this, with the foto they can tell you for sure!).
Disassembling the keybed is a bit more complex than opening the Nord but doable (see, e.g., the link to Nord USA support).

So I would carefully check if you can spot the key that feels different now! If you don't find any difference, well, I wouldn't care too much ;-)
If you are still under warranty, you could even consider getting it fixed since the weights shouldn't come off like this.

Lastly (even though only a remote possibility) some third party items could have slipped into the Nord (happened to me twice through the little space between the wood and metal chassis on the side), but I really think its a key weight!

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it. I sent a picture to Pablo at Nord Support and I will see what his advice is.

Nord Support confirmed it is a key weight. He gave me contact info to take it to a repair center, but I use the keyboard just about every day. It was easy to take the unit apart, but the keybed is connected to the bottom panel with metal screws into plastic struts. I didn't like the way it felt when I attempted to unscrew one of them, and even if I remove the keybed, key replacement does not look like a straightforward thing. I will call Pablo this week and see what he recommends. If I can get to the keybed, I might just opt to epoxy the weight back onto the key.

So with the help and guidance of Nord Support, I was able to re-attach the weight onto the key, and it appears that all is well, unit is good as new. Used an epoxy and let it cure 24 hours.

Thanks again to the fast response of the Nord support crew!!
