I often wonder why sound operators give the kit such a high level in the mix (if that's what happened). A kit is naturally VERY loud and requires very little sound reinforcement.

On the other hand, it could be the recording device, which normalized all the instruments :(. Instead of recording with a cell phone or condenser mic from a camera, why don't people take a feed off the line out of the mixer? Too much like work???????

Hi Lee-- I agree that it would be worth the hassle to use a decent mic. I perceive that every performance is a learning opportunity, and moreso if you capture if sound faithfully as it really projected into the room. I'm often surprised at how loud or soft my playing comes across in recordings-- definitely something I want to work on!

Thank you very much for the kind words about the playing. It comes out differently every time in the improv section! Both of those songs in the video were supposed to have a buzzy drone on the lower part-- (a B3 patch with 3rd and 5th pulled upfront) with maxed out tube overdrive. It's a cool effect on our recorded track (https://ofthewild.bandcamp.com/track/through-all-this-tide-takes-us) but unfortunately, the low end didn't come through in the live performance that day. (Well, maybe it did, but I'll never know for sure because I used a crappy mic, LOL!).

Moon,
That's rough, I've been there. I can't resolve your issue, but I will tell you that my experiences with the E-5 not performing have been "operator errors".
For example, I thought I was lowering a string patch by 1/2 step, but ended up globally raising ALL patches by 1/2 step.
My process now is: system memory off-revise settings- test - system memory ON!
Stick with it. Now that I have it figured out the E-5 has been an absolute GODSEND for live performance.
So much so that I (eventually) plan on replacing the Electro 3 HP, with an E5-HP
There is nothing worse than mid song failures.

Hang in there. BTW, I use ALL non-std pedals. No issues.

You say everything works at home but not at the gig. The main difference between the two seems to be how you were monitoring yourself; amp at home, FOH at the gig. Did you use a monitor on stage? Is it possible it's just that the EP was indeed in the FOH mix but you couldn't hear because you don't have a nearby monitor on stage?

I don't own an E5 so these next two ideas are shots in the dark.

Another possibility is the cable going from your E5 to the DI box. Was it mono or stereo? I don't know if the Left E5 output handles mono and stereo cables differently (or the DI box, for that matter), but it's one possible difference between the two setups. Still it doesn't seem like it would explain why only EPs weren't heard.

You also mention you use Pan in at least one program that didn't work. Is it possible you set the EP Pan to be full Right, and therefore it wouldn't sound on the Left output? Again, I'm not sure what the EP sends to the Left (mono) output; does it sum a stereo program?

Just some thoughts.
Thanks,
Tom

Intriguing problem! Further to Tom's suggestion, could you put some signal-level monitoring into your output at various stages, to be sure how far the signal is getting?

Maybe it was a phase cancelling issue since it was just affecting the electric pianos (which are mono), you might've accidentally plugged into the headphone socket rather than the L mono socket? However, I'm not sure if these symptoms are caused by plugging a mono cable into the headphone jack, could test.

plugging a TS plug into a TRS receptacle will have the effect of shorting one hot leg to the ground...

Hello, Pablomastodon- Maybe my mistake was that I just let the sound guy connect the keyboard into his system using one of his cables. Are you suggesting he perhaps used the wrong type of cable? What type of cable should he have used? (Maybe I've just had dumb luck because I've just been using whatever guitar cable I had laying around and never had a problem.)

I'm asking because I have another gig at that same place this weekend...

Hi Moonviolet,

Had a similar thing at rehearsals the other day, only to discover my rotary pedal was connected to the control pedal input and vice versa (they're right next to each other).

Switched them back to their correct inputs and my sounds were back.

PS I only lost them in set-list mode, they were there in program mode.

Steve

Update for anyone else who might encounter a similar problem: The next 2 gigs went fine using all the same patches. The only thing I did differently was to NOT use the footswitch for rotary speed.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Jeddy3. My control pedal worked fine that night but there's a possibility I plugged a cord into the wrong place. Very interesting that you only had a problem in set-list mode (which is what I use exclusively). Nice to know that going into program mode is a possible work-around, if this ever happens again in the future.
