I often wonder why sound operators give the kit such a high level in the mix (if that's what happened). A kit is naturally VERY loud and requires very little sound reinforcement.
On the other hand, it could be the recording device, which normalized all the instruments . Instead of recording with a cell phone or condenser mic from a camera, why don't people take a feed off the line out of the mixer? Too much like work???????
Hi Lee-- I agree that it would be worth the hassle to use a decent mic. I perceive that every performance is a learning opportunity, and moreso if you capture if sound faithfully as it really projected into the room. I'm often surprised at how loud or soft my playing comes across in recordings-- definitely something I want to work on!
Thank you very much for the kind words about the playing. It comes out differently every time in the improv section! Both of those songs in the video were supposed to have a buzzy drone on the lower part-- (a B3 patch with 3rd and 5th pulled upfront) with maxed out tube overdrive. It's a cool effect on our recorded track (https://ofthewild.bandcamp.com/track/through-all-this-tide-takes-us) but unfortunately, the low end didn't come through in the live performance that day. (Well, maybe it did, but I'll never know for sure because I used a crappy mic, LOL!).
