Nord Electro 5D 61 - odd key click in b3

Postby aardquark » 27 Dec 2016, 01:12

I recently got my 5D, so don't have any experience to fall back on. I hear at both the press and release ends of pressing any key while in the B3 organ emulation. Don't hear it in the piano sounds, don't hear it in the other organ (pipe, for example). It sounds like a very short bit of "dirty electrical connection", like a contact pop. Definitely not very musical. Since it is only in B3 organ, it does not seem to be related to the keyboard. Does anyone else have this? Is it normal?

This can be adjusted in the sound menu. See page 16 of the user manual.

That is exactly what it is.

It IS, however, extremely musical, and a fundamental part of the Hammond sound — it's the "eggshell" knocking that defines the attack.

Laurens Hammond hated it and spent thirty years desperately trying to remove it. The players disagreed. The organ models where he finally succeeded are the least desirable and most boring, yammering home-organy things he built.

Good to get confirmation that this is "by design". I was starting to think that maybe I got a defective keyboard. Thanks.

I just bought the electro5 HD and had the same question. Thank you for that detailed response.

Perhaps someone can tell me why I get the message "memory is protected" when I try to save program files?

Like jfenton, I will also refer you to p.16 of the manual, subheading "1" under "system."

Fantastic. The users manual that came with my HD is much less detailed and did not have this page at all. This is a great help.

Also....I noticed on this same page that under the sound menu, you can set the amount of click for the B3 model to low, normal or high....normal is the default.

To give credit where it's due, jfenton mentioned that in his initial reply.

It is frustrating I know. Even the lowest setting is too much. On a real Hammond, it’s one of the anomalies that makes it so expressive, but that artificial tkk tkk tkk Nord added is really distracting. In the lower-mid range the click is louder than the actual note. Ok for rock or R&B I suppose, but a useless board for trio jazz gigs where the organ carries the sonic weight. The NE is a bit too brittle for me.

I hang onto it but I love the size..perfect for dragging around to rehearsals.
