NE5D Keyboard Problem

Post by JamPro »

Hello. I just got a new in-a-box NE5D (73 keys). I have played it now 5-6 times. On two separate occasions, I have noticed the the highest F note on the keyboard sounds much softer than the surrounding notes, regardless of which patch I am playing (it is like the midi velocity value is limited because it sounds soft no matter how hard I strike the key). But last night there was no problem with the note at rehearsal, and this morning the note plays normally. I have not noticed this behavior with any other key.

So now what do I do? The unit is brand new. If the keyboard is malfunctioning, I want to return it to the dealer and get one that functions correctly asap. However, I will probably need to demonstrate to the dealer there is indeed a problem, and if the problem is intermittent, this makes recreating the problem for the dealer difficult. I have two shows to play in three days, and I don't want to have problems at a show. I am worried a small problem now will get worse later, and then I will be stuck having to repair a manufacturing problem at my own expense.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Is there any possibility this sort of behavior is midi-related or something I can fix thru the unit's menu settings? Do I dare open the unit to see if there is a mechanical issue with the keyboard I can fix? A brand new board should be trouble-free, so what do I do about this?

Hi JamPro,

Intermittent problems with any electronic device is a royal pain. I suggest playing your 5D as many times as you can before your shows and try to keep track of everything you do when the problem occurs. For example, which voice, EQ settings, etc... It may be just a piece of dust, which would be rare but not impossible :). I assume Nord assembles their products in an area resembling a clean room. You mentioned that it seems fine now? The keyboard is light enough that you could lift it off the stand and gently tip it back and forth to listen for a loose piece inside. Just a thought... At any rate, you are likely under warrantee for one year. I would have it checked out, if in doubt.

Thank you Mr. Batchelor for your suggestions. I will try tipping the board back and forth and see it anything shakes loose or dislodges. I have also thought I could remove any interfering dust or dirt by quickly going over the keyboard with a vacuum cleaner.

As I said earlier, last night and today the uppermost F note functioned just like all the other notes.

Sounds like you have a dodgy key, I had one on my brand new Electro 5D 61 (velocity was consistently about 40% too high). Was within 30 days and the shop swapped mine for a new unit. All good now. Good luck.

I'm sure it's rare, but it can happen.

The reason for this intermittent velocity issue is most likely debris on the contact strip, there are numerous posts/videos/articles on this forum and elsewhere about how to clean the strip and fix this issue. However, as it is a new board, you may want to pursue the warranty path.

I had to clean the contact strips numerous times on my Nord Electro 2, usually to remove sticky beer residue that had worked its way in. It's surprising how resilient Nords are to beer spillage, even the motherboard! I never did invest in that keyboard-mounted drinks holder...
