NE5D 61 worth the price difference to NE4D?

Post by sh4wn »

Hey there!

When I saw the NE5 announcement, I thought to myself: it's finally time to get my first Nord! But since then a shop in germany lowered their NE4D price to a ridiculous 1219€ (link, no longer available there) (NE5D 61 will be 1799€), which makes me wonder:

Do you think NE5D 61 is worth the ~600€ difference?

It would be an addition to an already existing 88 fully weighted stage piano and I'm always excited about having "the newest tech", but that price gap is massive! :?

I have a 4 with 73 keys. I got a reasonable deal when new.
The main difference in the info available is the layering of sounds
on the NE5.. I think the Leslie emulation on the 4 is much better
than previous models.

In my opinion, the main upgrade of the Electro 5 is the multitimbrality, and the ability to do splits and layers.
That makes the Electro a very capable do-it-all board.

Will you use splits and layers, especially as you already plan to use the Electro as your second board?
If you'll be using it mostly for organ, and will use your weighted board for pianos, go with the Elecro4, you won't regret it!

(just remember that you'll have to use the internal sounds of your second board. As the Electro 4 is monotimbral, don't think you can play the Nord piano sounds from your weighted board and at the same time play organ on the E4, that's just not possible! For that you will definitely need the E5)

It appears to me that the NE5 really adds split and layer not splits and layers meaning It is "duotimbral". I have an NE4 SW73 with a Casio PX-5S (which is very multitimbral). Not nearly enough added from 4 to 5 to make me consider upgrading.

Thank you guys for your responses!

The multitimbrality is indeed very interesting because I'd like to use the piano sounds on my 88 key board. Also Pablo from Nord pretty much confirmed that you will be able to play 2 sounds simultaneously, one from another keyboard, which is kind of a big deal.

Splits and layers are not that important to me, I might need it for my band on very rare occasions, but I mostly stick with one sound.

I also looked up the sample sizes of various Nord samples. You could fill the 180MB with just one piano, that's just sad...

I have a NE3 today (And a NordStage2), I use the NE3 on rehearsals - so I don't have to drag around to many kg - the NE61 is PERFECT rehearsal size for me - always ready in the bag - just to grab and go!
I feel the expanded memory on NE5 is the most important issue for me. When I discover a new nice sample home on my Nord Stage2 I would like to be able to load that same into my NE3 - but that is always a big hassle since my NE3 is totally filled up (around 30 samples)
I am very much looking forward to much more space for samples, even though I admit I seldom use more than 10 different sounds, it's always fun to try something new... And the new " Attac/ sustain / decay " knobs in the sample section will make the use of samples MUCH better, the few predefined values on NE3 and NE4 is not always my tasting....

OK - I hope for a reasonably priced 5D and I am a buyer :-)

that's not a big deal, that's a HUGE deal. After about a dozen years of sticking with an absolute rule that the Electro will not do this, they broke their own rule. How cool is that?

It is the new splits and layers feature which allows what you were praising in the last paragraph...

Bless,

Pablo

I know I know, the split and layer feature itself just isn't that interesting to me, but since it requires multitimbrality it's a "passively good" feature for me ;)

It appears that the NE4D is sold out at that particular price and I'm guessing there won't be any more 4Ds shipped. Well, I would buy the NE5D either way now :D Thanks everyone!

More memory is fantastic, but for crying out loud -- memory isn't expensive. Why didn't they give us 20GB of memory so we could get a bunch of the "big" versions of the pianos? Why not add memory expansion options? Sheesh!

Actually, the special Flash RAM required is extremely expensive. Yamaha, for example, charge about 300 US dollars per gigabyte of the stuff to add to their Motif XF.

The "common" RAM is no use for this purpose as it loses its contents when powered off.
