midi quality lacking dynamics

Postby damasp » 25 Jan 2017, 22:47

I've been using my Casio Px-5S to trigger some sounds in my Electro 3. Most of them sound very close to the way the would when playing the Nord. With the rhodes sounds in the Nord, there seems to be something lacking. There is a crispness of the attack of the keys that is not produced when using The Casio via midi. There is more of a dullness, no "bark" in the sound when played a bit harder.

The Nord is semi - weighted and the Casio is a weighted. Maybe this has something to do with it. I've checked all the connections and the Casio has local off.

Anyone else experiencing this or have a solution?

Thanks!

You could try changing the "Touch Sensitivity" function on the PX-5S to "Light".

I do have it set to light. It's mostly just a problem with the Nord Rhodes sound. The EP1 MK I, Low Deep in particular. When I hit the keys harder I can get bark or brightness from the Nord, that I can't get when triggering it with the Casio. It's a softer sound.

You need to play harder on the PX5as apparently, try to make this experiment: use a PC with a MIDI monitor and test the velocity levels you get when playing the Nord or the PX.

PS: not related but ensure you switch the HiRes velocity "off" on the Px.

As michale_c1 said in the thread at post85418.html - "Part of the nature of an SW keyboard is that, because there's less weight resistance, you're going to trigger the highest velocities more easily." So you more easily get the Rhodes high velocity bark (or the pianos' high velocity brightness) on the SW action. Since you're already on the Light velocity curve setting on the Casio, there's nothing more you can do there, but you could add a device like this between the Casio and the Nord to give you additional velocity curve options...

I replied in the other post by mistake, so:

Thanks Scott. Interesting about the velocity and the SW key bed. It seems to make sense why I don't get the same dynamics for the sounds like some Rhodes or Clavs. The Midi Solutions box seems like a way of adjusting that. It looks like it can be used when playing out, as well and retains the settings. If I went for it, I would want to have it be able to changes the velocity a few different voices that I found to be a problem.
