MIDI not working

Postby Georg » 07 Feb 2014, 17:39

Hi Guys,
as I wrote in the Stage Forum, I`ve got a Problem with my unit. My NE3 is not recieving MIDI commands (so do I think).
The MIDI LED on the front panel is off. Did I turn it (without knowing) off?
Can you help me please?

MIDI not working

If the MIDI LED is not flashing, it means that whatever device you're using to send MIDI commands is, in fact, *not* sending any MIDI data to the NE3. The problem is with this device, not with the NE3. It could also be a broken or disconnected MIDI lead.

Thanks for your answer, but on my NS2 the MIDI LED is flashing. Does that mean, the NS2 is just receiving midi commands? I am confused.
Now I just tried it vice versa. Connected the MIDI cable to the MIDI OUT jack of the NE§ an to the MIDI IN jack of the NS2.
Same result. The MIDI LED of the NE3 is not flashing.

Yes.

That won't work, because by reversing the MIDI connections, you are now sending MIDI from the NE3 to the Stage 2. The Stage 2's MIDI LED is flashing because it is now receiving MIDI from the NE3, which (if I've understood you correctly) is not what you want.

First, you need to connect the MIDI cable like this: MIDI Out of the Stage 2 to the MIDI In of the NE3.

Then you need to set the Stage 2 correctly to send MIDI to the NE3, which is most likely where you're going wrong.

If you're still having problems, the best thing to do is post a message explaining *exactly* what your setup is (what gear you are using and exactly how you have connected it) and *exactly* what you are trying to do. The more information you give us, the easier is is for us to help you.

I have the same problem with a brand new Stage 2. Plug the midi leads in a anything and everything works fine. Plug them in the Stage 2 and nothing. Tried lots of config options from within the Stage 2 midi settings but nothing. I find it quite odd that a manufacturer would dispatch a machine, post qa where the midi outs /ins were disabled by default. I've written to Nord. I foolishly updated the OS to the latest 1.72 version. Waiting on a response.

I doubt that it is your NS2. There are lots of things to check:
You can connect via the USB, or via the MIDI ports. Which ones do you have set?
There are 2 channels: a global and the Extern. Did you try both?
Did you try using a MIDI monitor program to check what MIDI bytes come out of the NS2?
Have you set the right channels?
When you send MIDI to the Nord, does the light flash?
Some people connect the MIDI cables the way round, some interfaces seems to have the IN and OUT labelled the way round.

Thanks for your answers. But still the question is:
When I made my setup (I will write it a post later), everything worked fine. Then - without changing the setup - the Problems start to begin and now it`s not working any more.
I don`t think, that it is aproblem of my setup, isn`t it?

This is my setup, made with the help of FunKey (thanks again). Look for further Information in the NS Forum, post of 23.09.2013:

•Turn off global MIDI in the NS2 (i.e. set the global MIDI channel to "off"). In the Extern menu, set the Extern mode to "global," and set the Extern channel of slot A as appropriate. In each program, do the following:
◦Turn on the Extern section.
◦Hold down Shift and press all three upper buttons of the Extern section until all LEDs at the top are off. (One LED at the bottom will still be on; you will probably want to set it to "program change" since that is the only thing you need.)
◦In the Extern menu, turn off everything except "program change" and "bank select," and set these two as appropriate. (The NE3 manual should tell you about the bank select implementation; probably CC0 should be 0, and CC32 should be the bank number.)

One more question to the NE3 owner:
Is the MIDI LED always flashing or can your turn it on and off by changing Settings?

No, there is no setting to turn this off.
