A fast way back to the original program.
What could do that ?
Long press on program A/B/C/D is already assigned.
Maybe a short press "shift-program" could do ?

Anytime I press my Sustain pedal I instantly get a "*" marker (maybe because I set it to change my Rotary Speed?).

Yep. Rotary speed is saved as part of a program, so changing it counts as editing a program.

Ah!, and when you press sustain and you do not control the rotary speed with the sustain pedal, the asterisk does not appear, so that makes sense.

But, unfortunately, the asterisk does appear even if the Rotary effect is not active. For example I play a piano with no effects and the asterisk does appear on my first sustain pedal. :(

Since you have assigned the pedal to both Sustain (damper) and Rotary, it is normal. In that case in fact, even if Rotary is inactive the "event" of Rotary speed toggle/change is generated whatsoever and if tou turn on the Rotary you should see it changed.

On my NE5D 73 I'm having a problem with the asterisk (*) and getting back to the original patch. I too thought that changing to another program and back again would discard the changes. Seems like it used to act that way (i'm now on OS 2.0) I even looked at the manual(!), found page 5 where it says that is the case. But mine doesn't discard the changes (can't get back to the original). Not switching programs, not powering down the machine!

This would be a great feature if i had expected it (and had an easy way to get back to the original). It would be like having a whole machine full of Live slots. But actually it's rather inconvenient, and i would prefer to have it work as designed.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Thanks,

Are you talking about the live programs? Then this is normal behavior.

If not... Then it's strange.

not in front of my instrument right now, but don't imagine that Live Mode uses asterisks because it's always storing...?
